Would You Go To a Funeral For Someone You Haven't Seen in 40 Years?

My cousin died Saturday. She was 71. She lived 2 hours north of where I've always lived. I haven't seen her in 40 years and truth be told I don't remember seeing her very often in the first place, maybe a dozen times in my childhood. I don't feel the need to attend the funeral. Someone suggested that it's like a "family reunion" at weddings and funerals to see people you haven't seen in a long time but I don't look at it like that. I have no emotional connection to this person, even though she's technically "family" nor do I have any emotional connection or memories to her siblings that would be at the funeral. Would you go the funeral 2 hours away to extend your condolences to people you barely know?

For me it would depend on who the person was. If it was someone I hardly knew, the short answer would be probably no. But again, it would depend.

@DaddyEvil Possibly in an out still for a spell, but I can't stay away from here too long. Too many good people here I miss, of course.

No. If there's no connection other than to say she's a cousin, then I would stay home.

@looeyville I’d also phone ahead to check if there’s a decent buffet afterwards.

Probably not, 40 years is a long time, If I wasn't close to them I wouldn't go
