The Origin of 2 Holiday Foods

My mom once helped a friend make some mince meat pies. She got really sick and was confined for a couple of weeks. I have only tried mincemeat once. It wasn't too bad but with the memory of how sick my mom got I don't have a desire to try it again. But, I was curious as to its origin.
It was a medieval spiced meat pie. It contained beef or mutton, suet, dried fruits and hot spices like nutmeg and cloves. The earlier versions were large and could feed a crowd. Over the years the meat disappeared leaving the rich, sweet mincemeat we have today.
What about eggnog? The medieval English equivalent was known as 'posset'. A warm milk curdled with wine and spiced and sweetened. This became a treat for the wealthy and aristocratic. Eggs and dairy were more plentiful in the America colonies and eggnog became a holiday indulgence.

Mom always made mincemeat pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I will eat one slice and then don't want more for a couple of years.
(She also made pumpkin pies - which I don't like. Cherry pies - which I DO like. And cherry/rhubarb pies - which I also like.
)
Nope, no eggnog for me!

I've never cared for the eggnog either. My daughter likes it so I always add a half gallon of it to the Christmas grocery list for her. I don't even remember what the mincemeat tastes like. I think I'll keep it that way.

I don't buy mincemeat pie and I can't eat a full cherry pie by myself since Pretty doesn't like it.

The year my Mom was with me, I took her to a local butcher. Mom had dementia at the time. We bought suet etc to make mincemeat with then we went home and together we figured out how to put the meat grinder together. Fun time though sad cause at one time Mom would have showed me and more.

I'm glad egg nog is only a holiday thing, because it's fattening! I don't recall ever having mince meat pie.

The medieval mutton and suet turned me off! I worry about the uncooked eggs in eggnog. Thanks for the info.
