It turns out my headphones (or monitors as I call them—musicians will know what I mean) went kaput. In fact, it's a kaput I have never seen before. The jack end came off. Literally. Inside an adaptor I was using on another computer where some of my garbage music files live.
I knew that Ollie's had a few variety of sets, but they were all around $15, and I thought, I know I can get them cheaper.
Granted, the pair I got now to replace the broken ones are only temporary. For monitors I want something of a bit better quality for obvious reasons at least obvious to me. But in the interim, I needed something that will simply do and didn't want to shell out an arm and a leg for them.
Not that $15 is necessarily an arm and a leg, mind you, but you get the point.
I decided to check out Five Below to see what they had. I've seen them there for $10 and thought, well, that's better than $15. But when I got there I found a set for $6.
With tax that came to $6.50.
I have tried them and so far they work fairly well enough. They will get me by in a pinch anyway until I can fetch the right set (which will likely cost me an arm and a leg by the way).
My external monitors do most of the work, and those work fine, so maybe these will actually work well enough without a need to actually get a more expensive set.
We shall see.

It sounds like you handled that headphone mishap really well! It’s always frustrating when something like a jack coming off ruins a reliable set of monitors, especially when you rely on them for music work. I like your practical approach of getting a temporary set to keep things running without overspending shows smart problem-solving. Finding them for $6.50 is a great score, and sometimes these inexpensive options surprise us with decent performance.
It’s also good that you recognize the difference between a temporary fix and the higher-quality monitors you ultimately want. External monitors taking most of the load make the temporary headphones even more viable. Sometimes we overthink “temporary” solutions, but in situations like this, they can serve their purpose perfectly.
It’s nice when the interim solution actually works well enough to ease the pressure while you save up or research the right professional set. This way, you’re not rushing into a purchase and can focus on what really matters: good sound quality and longevity when you do upgrade. Hopefully, these $6 headphones keep you going smoothly without causing any frustration in the meantime! I hope that would help?

That was good thinking to go to what used to literally be 5 below but now is $5 and above
