Aruba is Calling

So, most of you know I come from a big family. Every year for about a decade, all the cousins (mostly the first cousins because their kids are mostly grown and they can afford it) go on a cousins summer trip. One year it was just in Norman where I live, but one year it was in the Dominican Republic. In 2026, it will be Aruba. They don’t want to do a cruise, so everyone will chip in for a Vrbo , which means accommodation will be cheap. Aruba sounds very nice, but I’m not disappointed I can’t go. I think if it were a cruise I might feel disappointed, even though I’d never be able to afford the flight. Plus, you guys know how bad I do in the heat. But it certainly does sound fun especially since my cousins are a hoot and a half. I’m sure my sister will have some stories! Were/are you close to your cousins?

@AmbiePam - I am not at all a fan of the beaches and I dislike the heat, I have never liked Caribbean Islands.

@LadyDuck I can’t even take Florida without being miserable, so the Caribbean is probably best without me.

No unfortunately they all lived two hours away while I was growing up and I never saw them much or established strong bonds. Haven't seen most of them in 40+ years. The last time I saw my favorite cousin that I thought was my friend was 25 years ago and the only words she had to say to me/the first words out of her mouth were, "I see you finally got fat like the rest of us." So no, I don't need that kind of person in my life.

@AmbiePam As if you haven't already figured it out, my "family" treats me terribly. It's no surprise I have major depression and anxiety issues. My husband and Oliver are all I need.

No, I haven't seen any of my cousins in years. They are either in Canada, Washington state, Arizona, or Missouri.

@AmbiePam I don't really think so. It's not like we've been super close.

When we were kids, we were close to 3 of my cousins, but we drifted a part.

That’s easy to do as we age.

What few relatives I have left are in Latvia, and they have their own lives to live. Sometimes I think abnout that; these relative are also with families and doing all right for themselves. if they really cared about one stranded member in the US, they could figure out how to get me back but no one cares.

I'm sorry you can't go but you obviously know your limitations.

At this point in my life, even if I had the money, I don’t think I could “tough it out”. I’m excited for everyone else though.

@AmbiePam I know my limitations now and am not prepared to go beyond a certain point if I know it's going to be too difficult.

No, most of them are quite a bit younger than me. The two that aren't there was a divorce, and have seen them very sporadically since then. They don',t remember the games we played as kids

I barely know any of my cousins. I know some nieces and nephews but don't really know their kids at all. All of dad's side of the family are gone now and mom's side of the family lived too far away to visit.

I've never been close to my cousins; and when my father disowned me when I moved out at 21, I lost touch with my whole family. Three cousins, at first, kept in touch; but now they don't contact me anymore even though I send Christmas cards, etc.
