MINE

When I was a youngster living at my grandparent's I found a lot to keep me busy. Outside was such a glorious world. Grandma had a huge garden, there was the chicken coup, the garage and the side lawn too. So much space for a kid to play in. I would put all my toys in the Red Flyer wagon, and me and my dog Robin would start out with no real destination in mind. Sometimes my two cousins would join me.
But on days when I was inside for whatever reason I had things indoors to keep me busy too. One of them was finding my way into a stack of records by the old record player. One day I just ventured in and started playing the records. I kept seeing the word 'mine' and the occasional 'Lukie" on many of them. I wondered and played it anyway. Another with it on and they were all good records (actually old 78s) and I enjoyed them. But was curious about the words on them. Finally, I went in search of my grandmother and asked what it was, what it meant. She explained that it was my mom's way of designating which records were hers. And the Lukie on some was a nickname mom's aunt had given her. I had no real concept of 'mine' but being an only child, I hadn't dealt with such things yet.
Live and learn, I guess. Funny what we remember.

It seems like I spent most of my time outside when I was a kid. I'd take books outside with me and find a quiet place to sit and read... My favorite place was up in one of the cottonwood trees in the front yard. I used baling twine and made a hammock in the branches and would lounge in the tree reading most of the day.
I rode the horses a lot of the time and rode my bike, too.

So did I. I never played with dolls until later on. I remember visiting my BFF one summer in Oklahoma and she had introduced me to the sci-fi Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I took the first book over to the park and spent the day reading it. I looked up at one point and it 5 in the evening. I had been there all day. But what a book. He is a great writer.
We have cottonwoods here too. Your hammock sounds a bit precarious. I had an old green bike that I rode around. I also got into skates for a while. When we moved back to Boise from Pocatello there were several horses in the pasture across the lane from where we lived. I would go over and ride them bare back on occasion. Fed them greens first to make friends. I still remember them. There were three or four. That was only about 60 years ago.
I could go on and on.

@DaddyEvil ..........Nice to have such good memories.
I sure enjoyed those horses. I was very into them at that time in my life and I would sneak and ride them a lot. I found out later that the owner had commented once (he rarely came around and had a person who lived right close feed them) that he was glad I rode them periodically. They needed the exercise. So that relieved my mind. I thought sure that at some point I'd get in trouble, but I never did.

@celticeagle Horses do need to be ridden or they "forget". I'm glad he didn't mind you riding them.

Mom had scads of them. When she passed, I had to go through them all. Ugh! What a job that was.

We can remember snippets of our lives many, many decades ago; but sometimes have trouble remembering what we ate yesterday. lol I spent every minute outside when the weather was good in the summertime.

Wow ! This is such a warm and gentle memory, full of curiosity and childhood freedom. It’s easy to picture you wandering outside with your wagon and your dog, completely content and happy! Those open spaces and simple routines sound like a child’s perfect world. Bought joy to my mind and face as I read through. Even being indoors became an adventure when curiosity led you to those old records. There’s something magical about discovering music without knowing its story yet. Your confusion over the word “mine” feels very innocent and telling of that age. Your grandmother’s explanation turned a mystery into a small lesson about ownership and family history. It is moments like that like that quietly shape how we understand the world as we grow. You’re right—funny how such small, ordinary things become some of the memories that stay with us the longest. Enjoy the day!

Probably better that you did. I sure had a stack when my mom passed.
