A young lady during the Victorian Era (1837 to 1901) would have their coming out party when they were around 16 or 17, some even when they were 15. They would wear white. This was their formal introduction to society, and it meant they were now eligible for marriage. They were called debutantes, and they would begin being seen at lavish parties, concerts, and the races. This upper-class young lady was making her first appearance into fashionable society. She would begin to participate in events in the community to build her reputation, network and have community involvement.

I've read all of these things, and the "society pages" in the papers back in the old days, and it's totally foreign to me. Out of my pay scale, I guess.

This was Victorian elite. The rich folks. I'm sure the less affluent also had these 'rules' but on a smaller scale.
