What a looker she was too. She married Thaddeus, he died, and she filled his seat, all while raising her kids on their cotton farm in Arkansas. She was born Hattie Ophelia Wyatt in Tennessee, served as a Democratic Senator from Arkansas, and was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate, representing a good family background in the early 20th-century American South. Background: Born in Bakerville, Tennessee, in 1878, to a farming family, she later married Thaddeus Caraway, who served in Congress. Political Career: She became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1932, filling her late husband's seat and then winning a full term, serving until 1945. I love the name Hattie too. Do you?

There used to be a myLot member named Hattie... She passed away several years ago. I enjoyed visiting with her while she was still active. Hattie isn't a name I'd give my child, if I had another child.

@GoAskAlice Thank you. It's been a long, long time since I talked with her. I usually can't remember names for very long.

She did well. I admire the clothes they wore back in those days , though l can imagine how uncomfortable they must have been.

First the vote in 1920 and now this? (just kidding OT) She must have done a commendable job and was well liked in her state winning her own term.
