Kafaiti pastry nests

I wrote about making prawn thingys with kafaiti pastry. There was a lot of the pastry left over so I made some ‘nests’ with some of it which you can see in the photo. We had some with a prawn on top with our wine at night and another one with a scoop of ice-cream in it and peaches around the edge. They’re fiddly to do and I doubt we’ll do any of these again in the near future but at least we now know how and what to do with it.

Prawn things sound really good to make and eat.

Prawns are good but quite expensive here. Do you eat them often Judy?

@Ineeddentures I suppose we have them fairly often but we don't have a lot each. We might have them with pasta or rolled up in pancakes. I'm making excuses I guess as I think they're expensive here too. I just checked and one brand is 500g, uncooked, tail on for $20.

I have never heard of them. They look good but if they are fiddly to make then I have to pass.

@Ineeddentures @velvet53 Vince doesn't mind doing fiddly but spending an hour on something that's eaten in 10 minutes doesn't sit well with me.

Looks quite interesting! We have something similar that is used as Filling for ice Cream cones but I do not think I have tasted it much. And the name is interesting as well. One similar word "Kifayeti" in Urdu implies something that is economical and cost efficient !

It's really interesting how similar words appear in different languages.

You are so right, that pastry is not easy to use and I also will never buy again.

I think you'd only make them for a special occasion and it's hard to use up the whole packet. If you don't, it's hard to store.

Yes, and whatever you could put in a vol-au-vent you could put in one of these.

Heh. A multi-purpose treat. What is "fiddly"? Difficult?

You have to thraw it thoroughly and it's like a big tangled ball of threads. You have to tease them apart then pull off a small portion to use for each prawn. The prawns have been thawed and squeezed as dry as possible then wrapped in the strands.

That's a great shame. Touch wood, I don't seem to be allergic to anything except sulphur.

The nests are lovely. I would like mine with some pie filling in them or ice cream.

You could put just about anything in them. One recipe had feta and cheese as a filling but most things that would go in vol-au-vents would go in these nests.

I was given some kafaiti pastry dough, and I gave it away because I didn’t know what to do with it. It looks like you did a really good job.

They do look nice but they're not the easiest thing to eat; certainly not as finger food.
