Temple of Rats

I can understand the shudders of those who have a real fear of rats. I am partial; I can take them or leave them as long as they are not attacking me or taking over my territory. In Deshnok, India, you can find the Karni Mata Temple, or Temple of Rats. It was named after the goddess Karni, who has the belief that her family members would never die but instead would be reincarnated as rats. I knew a lady who believed dead souls came back as cockroaches. As it sometimes happens, the residents of the town believed the legend, and now the population of over 20,000 rats are thought to be members of the family of goddess Karni. They are considered to be sacred and are given food and refuge in the temple. They are said to be friendly, but with so many rats, it’s always good to take precautions. I would not mind getting a peek at this temple; I'll take one photo, and I am out of there.

Rats carry so much disease that I wouldn’t even want a picture. I’ll take a look at yours, admire your determination, then shudder in revulsion.

@AmbiePam I think the people with their beliefs there have overdone it on the rats.

@RasmaSandra Yep. They are overloaded with pollution and diseases because of it.

I remember that I saw a documentary about this temple. I also would prefer to get a peek but be careful with so many rats.

@RasmaSandra - Rats bring so much disease, they will have to diminish the population.

Gross! I'd rather not see or hear rats, mice or cockroaches. I'd be setting traps for them. On the farm, my brothers shot rats with .22 caliber rifles. They'd get in the barn and eat the cattle and horse feed.

@RasmaSandra If they're temple rats, just like the monkeys, they won't control them no matter what they're doing or who they're hurting.

@DaddyEvil they can be a big bother and I hope these people can manage to control the population.

I'm not keen, and my partner would absolutely freak out if we saw even one rat. I guess we will never be going there!

I'm afraid I wouldn't bother going there. It's strange sometimes how these legends persist.

@snowy22315 as I fully understand. Someone over there better think twice before everyone is overrun by rats.

I have heard about this temple of rats. The legend is carried down generations. Luckily there has been no plague outbreak as rodents are the primary cause.

20,000 rats. That will increase quite a lot and quite quickly. Sacred indeed
