As most of my myLot friends know I had to cancel my appointment with my Oncologist in December because the government has changed the Medicare policy all of the sudden not to provide me with rides to my Oncologist office 59 miles away! The transportation service via my insurance company at almost the last minute before my appointment in December said that Medicare would not allow it anymore! At the end of December my insurance company changed using that transportation service and began to use a new one at the beginning of 2026. Therefore I had to cancel my appointment in December and reschedule it for January 15th and pray that I could find a ride. After being on hold and talking to a lot of the wrong people for 3 hours I was also told that Medicare will not allow it! I had also called the Oncologist office and spoke with the nurse quite a few times. I was told that the caseworker at the office was on maternity leave and that at times another social worker with the association they belong to sometimes helps out. On the afternoon of January 13th I called and left a message with the nurse saying that I still didn't have a ride and did she have any ideas, that I may have to cancel again. The next morning she called me telling me that she had talked to the helping social worker and that she wanted me to call her. I called but somehow we got disconnected but she was great and called me right back. Got my address information and said that she was going to call to the transportation service within their association and they would call me back. Within' 3 minutes I received a text saying that they would pick me up and take me to the Oncologist office! Followed by another text saying that they would give me a ride home too! I called the nurse and let her know that I would be seeing them the next day. The next morning a driver got here early and was outside. He was from around where I was going and drove over an hour to get me. He was very nice and polite! When I came out another driver was there that was very nice and polite also, she even stopped and bought me soup and a drink from WAWA....... yummy chicken soup! She said that she hoped she would be the one driving me next time! She was from down there too!

Hallelujah! I am so glad it got worked out because I could not believe they were so uncaring they wouldn’t get you to your freaking oncologist! And how wonderful that they found such nice people to drive you.

Yes and it wasn't Medicare that cared, it was Bon Secours medical association that got me the ride. The Oncologist and his nurse had me call the American Cancer Society a few times and they have no volunteers in this area.

@dfollin Darn. The American Cancer Society is who drove my grandmother to her appointments. Thank goodness for that particular medical association that found that ride.

@AmbiePam They just don't have any volunteer drivers in the darn town that I live in! They referred me to other places that might, including a church. One of them have a few drivers but will not drive 69 miles to my Oncologist! The church doesn't drive people anymore! The Oncologist and his nurse both thought that they would too!

I’m sure glad to hear you got rides both ways. Not providing a ride for someone who can’t drive just isn’t fair and I am sorry that had to be very stressful for you.

Thanks! Oh I can drive just don't have a vehicle. Yes it is very stressful, because I have to call around every three months looking for a ride for my next appointment.

That's wonderful that you got rides sorted out. Shame you had to go through hoops to get it. I have the same issue sometimes getting my wife to her appointments if the weather is bad.

I'm glad assistance like this exists, but god I hate to rely on it. The year my husband wasn't driving, we used ride share for medical appoitments. Why? Because the Va claimed he wasn't disabled enough to qualify for the service (he had a stroke) and if I tried to use the one provided by my health care provider, unless it was an emergency room, I am sure they would've told me hell no. Where I live has a door-to-door service, but I wouldn't trust it for anything important. We need to do better for those who don't drive.

I got it at the last minute though! It was supposed to be via my insurance company. However the government blocked them and didn't let me know till 15 days before my appointment!
