Annoying habits

@Traceyjayne just mentioned people who open doors etc. and then just leave them open; very annoying. Currently we have a couple of lodgers who are just lovely people and great to have around, clean and tidy and basically no trouble – but they have one annoying habit. They never quite close the kitchen drawer. They open it to get cutlery and then push it almost closed, but leave a small gap, just enough for crumbs to drop off the countertop above (which is where we normally make sandwiches etc.) and fall into the drawer. Why would you do that? Why go to the effort of pushing it just enough that it almost closes, but not enough to actually close it?? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.

Thank you for the mention …. If I was there at the time I might close the drawer and. Say ….” Oh I will just close the drawer so you don’t catch your fingers in it “ and hope they get the message …. Or “ is this drawer stuck “ …and close it ….” Oh , no it’s fine, just not closed properly “

Pretty totally ignores me when I close drawers/doors behind her.

I might just try that. It's funny but it only seems to happen with that drawer. Of course that one is the one that gets opened most often but they do also use other drawers and seem to manage to close those!

That is surely annoying, I am glad that my kitchen drawers "self-close" when you just push them a bit. You can buy the self close slides and replace your actual drawers slides.

Oh, I should really watch to see if I do that. I don’t think I do that, but it sounds like something my absent minded self would do. Only, I’m not a sandwich maker so there are no crumbs.

@fleura They must spent some effort in almost closing the drawers but not quite. My wife just can’t close cupboard doors in the kitchen. Just isn’t in her nature.

@Fleura She hasn’t got any better. And she never screws a top back on a bottle, just balances it there and when I lift it by the top everything goes everywhere.

I remember you mentioned that before. I thought of you when I was writing this!

Some people have the habit of switching lights and fans on and forget to switch them off. This increases the electricity bill.

That is annoying. At least open drawers don't cost anything!

@Fleura Yes, but dust and at times pests like cockroach and small rats get inside those drawers.

My husband was like that. He used to do it sometimes to be funny because he knew it annoyed me. Cabinet door, drawers...always a little bit open. I wish he was here to leave them open now.

Pretty does that and also almost closes cabinet doors. I have no clue why she can't close them the rest of the way. I'm always going into the kitchen and closing cabinets and drawers behind her. Saying something to her about it doesn't help. She'll still only close them most of the way. It's extremely annoying!

That would be annoying for sure. Being a relatively new house this one has the self-closing drawers like Anna's.

I remember how upset my nephew was when a cousin of his who visited for a few days left all the top cupboard doors wide open. He was out of town and had asked the cousin to stay.
