5 Ways to Check How You Are Aging

I found what I think is a great video on YouTube. I know that we have several older folks on here and this video I found is for those between 65 and 85. I for one don't want to have to do exercises every day or have some physical therapist come in weekly having me do stuff. I thought doing brain teasers was the way to go but after watching this my thoughts have changed. These five things are goals I have set for myself. Check it out: 1. Getting up from a setting position without using our hands. To gain strength in the pelvis and thighs we can do 10 chair squats each day until we are able to rise without the use of our hands. 2. Walk backwards 10 steps without looking back. This will tell you if your brain and body have good communication and that your brain is able to process spatial information, coordinate muscle movements, and maintain balance simultaneously. A very important one to accomplish. 3. Bending down and touching your toes without bending the knees. Flexibility and stretching the hamstrings is very important. Flexibility determines how easily you move throughout the day. This flexibility protects your back. Tight hamstrings pull on the lower spine. Flexibility here can help you avoid years of back pain. 4. Stand on one leg for 30 seconds. Balance determines whether you remain independent or are dependent on others. It tests vision, inner ear, and proprioception which is the awareness of the position and movement of the body. 5. Getting up from the floor without using your hands. This requires strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness. I really thought I was doing well until I tried some of these. You might be surprised. I have set some goals for myself, and you might want to do this too.

I shall not try any of these. As I feel this post was relevant 9 weeks ago before I turned 65 Touch my toes, not a cat in hells chance. Getting up from the floor without using my hands, lol, trying would be so funny

It's all up to you. Like the doctor said and I repeated: It's whether you want to remain independent or be dependent on others. I for one want to be independent as long as I can be.

Doing a couple of these exercises would have me calling the EMTs. Not joking. The one where you get up without using your hands? The physical therapist was working on trying to get me to that point. It isn't as simple or easy as it appears. I do balance exercises in the pool.

I strive to continue to try them all and hopefully will be able to at some point. I'm glad you are doing the water exercises. Balance is so important.

@celticeagle When I'm at the stove waiting on stuff to boil I hand onto the stove handle and lift first one leg then the other. Little things make a difference.

I’m definitely feeling my age even though I’m 36 I don’t feel the same as when I was in my 20’s

That's what aging does to us. I think if you did these now you would feel better and be set for when you are in your 60's and on up. It comes on us quickly.

Nope. Can't do most of these. If I walked backward, I would be sure to fall. Interesting though.

I can do all of those things but will not walk backwards. I might fall over a cat.

I know, right. My daughter has that same problem. This one is right under foot constantly. I'm worried she might fall on the stairs because of it.
