Along with the actors, well-known, and should have been well-known individuals, I’m saluting the music greats we lost last year. I’ve tried to stay away from the country musicians, but this one is unavoidable. So Linda? NO! Here’s today’s performer.
#4: Buck White
What do you do when you’re a protective father and your daughters want to sing? Simple, you form a band with them so you can keep an eye on them!
No, that wasn’t it, but Buck White and his daughters knew family music from the get-go. Starting in the 70s as the “Down Home Folks,” they made a name in bluegrass before recording a string of country hits in the 80s. Buck played the mandolin and piano, while Sharon and Cheryl (and sometimes Rosie) provided the harmonies.
Oh, and he had a pretty well-known son-in-law, too: Sharon is married to Country and Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Ricky. Skaggs.
I didn’t know Buck real well (as in, good friends) but I did know him. He was a HOOT. The guy had a marvelous sense of humor and was an absolute joy to be around. He’d been ill for a long time (as many people in their 90s are), but it was still very sad to learn of his passing last January.
The world is a little less funny because Buck isn’t here anymore.

Born H.L. White, December 13, 1930, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Died January 13, 2025, Hendersonville, Tennessee (long illness) (age 94)

Glad you enjoyed it.
Completely unrelated, we had a prompt in our music group the other day about celebrating Australia Day with an Australian artist. I chose Slim Dusty singing “Waltzing Matilda.” You don’t get more Australian than that!

@FourWalls That's about as Aussie as it gets! Rhetorical question but have you reallly listened to and understood the lyrics? Some years back, some wanted it for our national anthem!!
It's about a swagman stealing a sheep, for Heaven's sake. Can you imagine that being played at the Olympics?

@JudyEv — I think there’s a video with a translation (explaining what a billabong is, etc.).
