Collector of Fun Hats

Long ago, I was a collector, not a hoarder, but someone who enjoyed having several of things I loved. At one point, I collected owl figurines after raising two real owls before Fish & Wildlife stepped in. I collected teapots too, especially antiques, back when I had a big house where everything could be displayed beautifully instead of feeling cluttered. I once had a full library in my home, over 3,000 books, including many old and first editions. I even loaned books and games out to fellow neighbors as well. All of us lived far from the nearest library. For a while, I collected antique plows, horseshoes, and other farm relics and used them as garden and outdoor decor. I had horses but never collected a lot of horse stuff other than horse shoes, old saddles and the like. I still have my grandpa's bosal. Now that I temporarily live in a travel trailer, I don’t really “collect” anymore. If something special crosses my path, usually a vintage brooch or a small piece of jewelry, I might bring it home, but that’s about it. Lately though… I seem to have developed a fondness for fun hats. Not practical caps (though I do have beanies with my hosting emblem, my hosting state park cap, and one from Alaska), but the silly, playful, personality-filled kind. My bedroom in the house will eventually be an eclectic mix of Victorian and French toile, so the hats won’t be on display out in the open. I’m planning a creative way to store and display them inside my closet instead. I only have three “fun” ones so far, but I suspect a few more may catch my eye down the road. The fun furry topped one I bought last week and the "Pretty" one I bought yesterday. My son gave me the "Drink More Coffee." Funny how collecting never really leaves. It just changes size, shape, and meaning. Do you collect anything, or did you once and then let it go? I’d love to hear your story.

We stopped collecting and got rid of everything when we moved here. We had so many things we did not need and never used. We kept our CDs music collection, those do not take an enormous space.

@noni1959 - CDs do not take much space. We donated many DVDs of movies, those take more space.

@LadyDuck My oldest daughter has 100's of them in her storage. She wants to have a media room when they get moved to Washington and in a house.

They don't take up much space. I had about 500 up until last summer and decided to let them go when my CD player went out in my truck. A man wanted them and gave me a good price.

Hubs loves antiques and collected way too much of everything, especially silver, crystal, art, etc. I had to put my foot down. Enough is enough. I collect certain new handbags and shoes, tees and sweatshirts from our travels, and hats to wear in the sun and to play sports or exercise in. Hubs better not put his foot down.

@DianneN I love purses and hope to get a couple more high quality ones. Long ago, I had over 100. It's funny I am a minimalist, but I had that many purses. Now, I have four.

@noni1959 Wow! That’s certainly a riot I refuse to buy a new purse until the tariffs are lifted, so I should call myself a minimalist, too.

@DianneN I always say if something makes you happy, it still fits in the minimalistic category.

I used to collect Beswick horses and have quite a lot of them but now I don't know what to do with them. I'd really like to get rid of them before I die so someone else doesn't just take them to an op shop.

I bet they are beautiful. I found a Brewers horse in the thrift shop and grabbed it. Then found a vintage brass horse and wagon and got it too. I think I have a new collection started.

@noni1959 How cool is that? I've carted horses figurines home from all sorts of places including one I found in Achmelvich in Scotland.

@JudyEv It is so cool. I'm loving the Brewers horse. One of my granddaughters is trying to get it from me and I said I get to enjoy it for awhile first.

I'm trying to downsize and unclutter; so I haven't bought anything new. I do have a collection of owls (I'm so jealous that you raised an owl), little cottages, over 100 magnets, etc.

@noni1959 I collected magnets on all of our trips; and my SIL and BIL would send me some...they traveled all over the world.

@LindaOHio Magnets can be so fun and not take up much space. I have three in my travel trailer but they won't stick on my refrigerator, so they are on my stove exhaust hood.

I love books. The center hat my granddaughter talked me into picking up. She said it would be a fun hat for a video I do later. My son gave me the Drink More Coffee cap.

I used to collect odd candles, but, and it’s a long story, my sister threw them away. They were amazing: a Scooby Doo Mystery Mobile, a lava lamp candle, a dolphin…they weren’t tiny either. It brought me such joy. I just don’t have the money to do that now.

I'm sorry she threw them away. Unique candles are fun to see. I hope some day you can get a couple more.

I love toile. My boyfriend gave me a pink Hello Kitty hat and he gave my mother a beanie which loves. When I was tween, I collected magazines of New Kids on the Block. I do have a little collection of porcelain dolls. I wish I could have collected some more. I also had a collection of golden stamps, but I have lost that collection.

@JESSY3236 Those sound like fun collections. When I was a teenager, I collected a lot of music magazines with lyrics. I forgot about those. When younger, I loved comic books.
