Many of you would be aware that my husband, Vince, is in northern Thailand on a photographic trip. At the moment, they are north of Chang Rai, visiting the Akha people. He is with three others; one is a Belgian but lives in Thailand, his partner is Thai and the other photographer is from Sri Lanka but now lives in Djakarta, Indonesia. The Akha are indigenous to the area but have been pushed further and further from civilisation by the authorities. They have a subsistence lifestyle and rely on tourism for any cash income. Through his contacts, the tour leader has full access to most areas of their lives. He hopes to produce some postcards that they could sell. The old man in the photo (not Vince, the other old man! ) is a year older than Vince. The Thai member of the group is on the right. They are wearing their ‘best’ clothes for the tourists. I was a bit surprised that their skirts were so short.

Vince is looking happy and healthy in that photo. I hope they can make postcards for the people to sell to tourists.

@DaddyEvil He did forget to take enough pills from his Bangkok hotel. Why he didn't just take them all I don't know.

@JudyEv - They are simple people, they usually live as we did many years ago, less technology, more empathy.

The outfits they wear are nice looking. My Dad and middle brother were stationed in Thailand.

There would be a lot of work making those costumes. Do you know if they enjoyed their time there?

What a great photo. I knew nothing about the indigenous people of Thailand.

When we helped put in a water supply further south, they belonged to the Karen people. I guess there might be others as well.

You are joking about the skirts being short, aren't you?

Well, they're above the knee. Vince said they have to be careful when the ladies are sitting down that they're not getting inappropriate photos.

How cool! I hope the postcard endeavor is successful. It’s just wrong that the authorities are bothering them.

@JudyEv Yes, but our government and your government have stopped bothering our people. The government in Thailand has not.

I'm sure the story is much the same for many indigenous people - our First Nations people, your native Americans, etc.

He said the people are delightful. Nothing is too much trouble for them as in 'stand here, stand there, tilt your head, etc, etc'.

At first glance, I thought Vince was hanging out with a bunch of women! Both my sons loved Thailand, but I am pretty sure they didn’t go as far north as that. Pity.

I did read that when I went looking for information on the Akhas. It's a complex situation for these tribes, I'm sure.

Vince? OLD??? Nah. It’s so sad that those people are being treated the way other nations have treated the indigenous people. That sort of abuse isn’t unique to one nation or political mindset, is it.

Nice photo. Obviously, it is a nice break for Vince and he will be back with some lovely snaps. I visited Chiang Mai few years ago and Chiang Rai is 200 kms north of it.
