Black swans at risk

I read an interesting story on my newsfeed this morning about Western Australia’s bird emblem, the black swan. These are grass-eaters and nest around lakes, rivers and billabongs. However, when food is scarce, adult birds abandon their young (cygnets) in search of better food sources. The cygnets are left to fend for themselves and often migrate from the wetlands in search of water. Some get to the ocean before they are fully fledged and find themselves battling currents and strong winds. Volunteers have been rescuing these young cygnets, keeping them safe until they are fully fledged and able to look after themselves. Last year, 400 cygnets were rescued and 200 have been taken into so far this season. The black swan population is not yet at risk but numbers are falling. I would love to be involved with something like this but we’re an hour or two away from the action so I can’t really help. The photo is mine.

You would be perfect to be involved in that. I’m just sorry you’re too far away.

@AmbiePam Thanks but I need to be careful as sometimes I get carried away and then regret it later. I lack commitment sometimes.

I'm sure I can find something equally satisfying but a bit closer.

I’ve only seen black swans in Puerto Rico. So happy the volunteers are trying to rescue those poor babies.

I don't really know how widespread the swans are.

Poor little babies, usually animals do not abandon their babies. I am glad to know that volunteers are trying to rescue them.

@JudyEv - May be it happens with most animals, we are sometimes surprised to see a cat or a dog abandoning one of their babies, but there is always a reason.

I know when there are droughts and not enough feed, ewes will abandon their lambs sometimes.

The tiny cygnets start of white and become grey, then black as they age.

They need more volunteers as they are stretched to their limit.

The volunteers are doing a great job. I love to be a part of any such initiative. Yes, distance can not make it possible for you to be a part of it. There might be another ways to help them from distance like a find raiser to support those volunteers.

There are people who go out in dinghys and scoop them up. Then they look after them untill they mature a bit more.

There is a dedicated bunch of people doing what they can to rescue those too small to fend for themselves.
