It's Groundhog Day

United States
February 2, 2026 5:47am CST
February 2 every year is Groundhog Day. A groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, from Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania, is pulled out of his hole to determine the fate of Winter. If Phil sees his shadow, it indicates six more weeks of winter; if not, spring is expected to arrive early. He's only right 37% of the time. I mean, think about it. If it's a cloudy day he's not going to see a shadow, and if it's a sunny day he is. It's all just for sun with no real meteorological science behind it. UPDATE: He saw his shadow. 6 more weeks of Winter.

@LooeyVille In my years of doing rescue work, vets told us that if a pet had not gone #2 in 3 days, it warranted a vet visit ASAP. I hope he can get things moving very soon. Poor kitty.

We just "dosed him" with some cat laxative hoping that's the problem and he can "take care of business" that he hasn't been able to do for 3 days. Not to be too graphic, but he's drinking and peeing fine, but not eating or doing #2. If not better by tomorrow, we're taking him to a veterinarian.

Groundhog Day is a celebration I have known ever since I watched the movie of Bill Murray of the same title in the 90s.

I was in Punxatawney once and saw Phil's den. He lives in the library. They have a little enclosure fixed up for him.

I never understood that since "spring" is 6 weeks away anyway. But I guess that does make sense if spring weather could arrive earlier. We are having spring weather already here.

It really doesn't matter what his predictions are to those of us who live here or in other places that have normal winter weather. It just doesn't turn to spring here until later on. We may have a few warm days, but they never last long and cold weather comes back. Groundhog Day has it's place, people enjoy it and it breaks up the monotony of winter.

We have our own groundhog, Jimmy. He's just as much as a local celebrity as Phil is.

Of course, I know it’s just a “fun” thing to do, but I wouldn’t mind 6 more weeks of winter. But mostly because are winters are usually fairly mild, and I need a long break from 100+ degree days of summer.

Exactly. They should just flip a coin, in my opinion. It would be just as accurate.

That's interesting! I was not aware of this. How long has this been in practice? I want to know how old is Phil. It would be interesting to know how this interesting practice started.
