Such a lot of work for a head-dress

In case you’re wondering what the photo shows, it’s the back of one of the Akha women’s headdresses. The stitching and embroidery are all done by hand. Such a lot of work must go into these things.
The Akhas live in the very north of Thailand, north of Chang Rai. They are an ethnic group who made their way from China into south-east Asia during the early 20th century. In Thailand, they are classified as one of six hill tribes and most are registered as aliens. They have little say in how or where they live and can be forced to move by the authorities. They earn a little money through the sale of coffee and other products but mostly they have a subsistence lifestyle.

That’s a beautiful headdress. That’s a horrible story about the life forced on them by the government.

@JudyEv — hopefully you don’t have ICE agents arresting native Australians.

@FourWalls I guess I sort of meant before the Trump era. However, the police can be pretty hard on our indigenous people and often assume they're up to no good simply because of their colour.

That's amazing handiwork. They are being treated the way the US treated the Native Americans. It's shameful.

Beautiful! It is impresive the amount of beauty that some people do with their hands. I brought some beautiful needlework from Kunayala when Y went sailing with my friends some years ago.

I thought that was a woman's handbag. I'm sure I've seen some just like that here.

I would have thought it was a purse just looking at the photo

That's impressive. I have always been fascinated by hand-made traditional clothings.

@JudyEv That's the lack of culture in itself on their behalf, primitive to me equals principals and beginnings and lots to learn from
