Taxes are done

. . . and I'm a loser this year.
Honestly I was expecting it after all of the homebounds and coverages I did last year. One of the people I share a classroom with prepares taxes on the side. I told her that I was doing them today and I was likely going to owe due to all of the side work. She said yes and it was because they don't tax that income at the same rate as what they do for my salary. She also said that I wouldn't benefit from the Big Ugly Bill that passed last year.
Yup we were both right. I owe $1000 for federal. I am getting $383 back from the state though so that's something. I could have just paid it today out of my checking but after that and my rent it would have left me lower than I like to have for that balance. I opted to just mail in a check. I have until April 15 to do that so there's no rush. I'll likely get it out in 2 weeks when I get paid again. No need to have that hanging over my head.
So that's done for this year. Not the result I had hoped for but also not unexpected.

So much for life being better with the current leader of the free world in charge. You got the short end of the stick.

Hey, at least you get back from the state. Sorry about the federal.

Oh, I'm sorry. No one wants to pay taxes, but that's how it goes sometimes. Back in my working days when I worked extra, etc. I started having a small additional amount taken off of each paycheck to withhold for taxes. It wasn't a large amount so it didn't hurt so much like your amount will. It assured me a small refund rather than owing at the time. Maybe you can do that for next year?
