Popular names from my era

I wrote about how Asian names differ from the Anglo-Saxon names I’m more used to. I found Ireland had a lot of names which I’d never heard before. In our village of around 150 houses, you can tell by the names that we’re all of a certain vintage. There are at least three Judy’s, four Maureen’s, five Barbara’s, five Carol’s, five John’s, seven Michael’s – and so it goes. But there is only one Vincent! The photo wasn’t taken by Vince obviously but it’s from his camera. It was taken in Hua Hin, Thailand.

I agree with you. I named my younger daughter for my most loved doll yet in her classroom there were 4 or 5 Claudias. Now it seems that that name is not used anymore but I have seen Almonds and other fruity names lately.

Hazel is quite a common name but I have never come across any other nut-related names - Acorn? Macadamia?

@LadyDuck It seems that Italy and Chile have similar common names. I remember Claudia Cardinale, the actress.

@JudyEv I remember a Lionel at school! That was an unusual name then among all the Michaels, Marks, Johns, Davids, Gareths etc.

@judyev A lot of people here use the Irish spelling of names, Kevin is Caoimhin. If you stand in a busy street and shout Billy or Jean quite a few older heads will turn and shout “What?”

Love the photo. Vince looks great, too. Names come and go from various eras. The only Vincent I ever knew was a former student.

That's a nice picture of Vince. My name is kind of old. I don't think there are many Lindas around anymore.

For the longest time I was the only Heather I knew, now there are many, all younger than me. No really little ones, though. Names certainly go in funny cycles.

Debbie and Karen were both big names when I was born. Cheryl and Sharon were too. Boys names nothing seemed overly popular. I never knew a Vincent.

The picture looks quite nice ! Some names get repeated a lot. I read or heard once that James is a very common name in western world. In India, names vary from regions and cultures. Names like Rohit, Shyam, Ram, Yasir, Gurpal, Gopal are quite common. I will check on your other posts in the days to come.

Vincent is Horse Jr.'s middle name. He is 17 now. My name was unusual in the US as I was growing up.

There was a family just up the road from Vince's when he was growing up and the three boys had the same names as three in Vince's family except that their Gerald was the Evans' Gerard.

When I was born ….1966 …Tracey was very popular ….sadly no longer. So there are lots of Tracey’s who are in their 50’s and 60’s, but you probably won’t find one under 40.

It was the fashion for a while to try to spell a name a bit differently. We know a Kevan and a Beven, other of which are unusual spellings.
