A question for you

I’m sure we’ve all seen photos of some exotic Asian foods that seem very foreign to Westerners. I didn’t take much notice of the birds in this photo as I’ve seen similar images quite often before. But when I looked at the actual heads of the cooked poultry, I did a double take. What do you think they are? They look like waterbirds to me but not domestic ducks: more the ones with the long beaks.

@JudyEv They are ducks, Peking ducks to be precise, as you can see one in a dish. As you can see our Chinese members recognized them.

@LadyDuck Yep, fair enough. I'm convinced now although the beaks in my photo still look longer.

Thanks for the link. Chinese roast duck is popular here too but rarely served as a whole bird.

I would buy the duck without the head on it.

Ducks look a lot different when they're hung up like that. I don't eat duck meat. It's too fatty for me.

@JudyEv Yeah, it's the head and beak that makes it look so long.

Duck isn't seen a lot in our stores but it's always on the menu in Chinese and Japanese stores.

I'll leave it to readers with better knowledge to answer that one. I guess we tend to see our poultry kind of trussed up so a different shape.

@JudyEv They do look rather more like a stork or something. But then I'm not used to seeing a duck like that so I can't say for sure.

I’m pretty sure considering my eyesight that they are ducks. I’ve seen them in all the Chinatowns I’ve been to as well as all over China. I always wondered how fresh they could be.
