Did a jet taking off from Concord really crash inverted right next to my apartment building this morning?

At about 7:30 this morning, I was awakened by the loudest explosion I have ever heard in my life. That includes a hash lab exploding just across the freeway, mining blasts in Montana, transformers blowing up a block away here in California, and my very occasional digestive gas after eating a burrito. I lay in my bed, awaiting another bomb blast. Kitty scampered in from outside and disappeared into the closet. My first thought (I'm serious) was: It can't be Trump or the Russians. That would make no sense. My second thought was: A plane from Concord has crashed. We are on the flight path from Concord, and planes taking off fly over us every day. But then I heard the rain. It was like no rain I had heard before, Looking out my window, I spied hailstones bouncing in the driveway. They were about 1/4 inch thick. Not golf balls. I will not exaggerate, Mark Twain be darned. Could the explosion have been thunder? I looked toward the East. I saw a flash of light. About two seconds later, I heard another explosion, not as powerful as the first, but still louder than anything I had experienced before this day, including (perhaps) the Yes concert I attended in the 1970s. . Later, I drove through the (mellow) rain and many deep puddles to Safeway to procure some wine for Kitty. People were chirping about our squall. A fella there told me that the lightning had hit a redwood tree a couple of blocks from where I live, and had split it in two. He showed me a picture, but it was on his cell phone, and too small to really make sense of. I will do a tour of the neighborhood when things settle down. I would not be surprised if there were tornado warnings out on the Delta this morning. . What is the loudest thing you have ever heard?

Not quite sure, but thunder can get very ear splitting at times. Is kitty a red or white fan?

Oh sorry. Senior moment. Mostly white. Goes well with tuna and whitefish, whatever that is.

We had lightning hit a tree very near the house once. That was pretty loud.

I would think so. It is just raining lightly now. I survived Guitar Center.

I think that the explosion could have been thunder. When a lighting hits very close you hear a very loud noise. I remember when it hit a house near us in Switzerland.

@TheHorse - It came back to my mind when a lightning went down through the fireplace of my grandparents, out from the door and cut in two a tree in their garden. It was summer, the month of August. We all had a good scare.

It was definitely a thunder clap. Some of those close lightning strikes produce thunder that shakes the house.

Yep. It was the loudest I have ever heard. I did not hear/read anything about tornadoes to the East, though. During my Iowa days, such weather (including the hail) could mean a tornado was nearby.
