Checks in the old days

United States

I remember ordering checks from coupon pages in the Sunday paper, since it was so much cheaper than ordering from the bank. I loved to order a space background or some Sci-fi type, which were hard to find. It took a long time at the check out to pay with a check, because they had to look at your license and write down all the info, and this was after everyone waited for you to fill it out. I'm glad to just use my debit card today--it's fast and I can see immediately what I spent by going to my bank online. Do you remember checks? Of course, checks are still around, just not for the average person spending money.

I still have checks, but of course, I use them so infrequently I don’t bother to get special ones anymore. I loved picking out the cool designs back in the day. I remember having New York Yankee checks for a year or so.

It was fun to pick out our favorite checks.

I still write checks once in a while... It's just as easy as waiting for someone to run their debit card when the machine is being balky.

I hardly run into balky machine at the store, but I'm sure it happens a lot.

@misunderstood_zombie With as much money as Walmart stores make, they don't like to buy new machinery or new programming for the machines they already have. That's why they're always having trouble with it. Balky machines aren't anything new in their stores.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, there's not a lot of positive things to say about Walmart. I still shop there though.

No such arrangements here. Yet some of the old practices were quite innovative and useful to many in the public. But we use Cheque Books (I think same as what you call Check) are used much lesser now than before. We have Mobile based scanner Apps for many of the things including KYC.

Yes, I think for the most part checks are a thing of the past.

Checks are no more around here, they are no more accepted and issued. It's a long time I used a check, I think 20 years ago last time.

@misunderstood_zombie - I lived in Switzerland and after the year 2005 the checks were no more available.

I think for me also it's been over 20 years.

It must have been a while since you wrote a check.

I still have some checks but rarely, if ever, use them anymore. I think I wrote three or four checks this past year. We even have places here that no longer take checks at all--it's either a plastic card or cash. I can almost understand that. I recently got behind a gentleman at the store who wrote a check. He had to provide two forms of ID before they would accept it. I do think checks are on the way out with the exception of big ticket things, like a car or a house? Just a guess.

I haven't seen anyone write a check at the store in forever. I think your right it is now just for big ticket items.

@misunderstood_zombie It seems to be that way now.

In some instances, we have no choice but to pay by check, and not often thank goodness.

I agree that sometimes it's unavoidable.
