Firefighters with the Hadley Massachusetts Fire Department answered an emergency call on Saturday morning when a dog fell through the ice in the Connecticut River.
The fire chief of the Hadley Fire Department requested assistance from firefighters from the Hadley and Northampton firefighters to assist the lone firefighter who risked his life to rescue the dog by using an ice rescue sled and a dry suit by entering the river while the other firefighters arrived and assisted the lone firefighter to rescue the dog and take the animal to shore.
Thank goodness no firefighters were hurt in the rescue mission and the dog is in good condition after being rescued by the firefighters.

The firefighter had the special equipment to enter the icy river, but you are right that it is risky for anyone to jump into an icy river to save a dog.

Perhaps the lone fireman should have waited for backup, instead of risking his own life like that, but I guess that he assessed the risks, and so made the call to rescue the poor stranded dog.
