Saturday was my mom’s birthday. Since my brother was here for work, he decided to have dinner at a Greek restaurant in honor of my mom’s birthday. He invited me and also my mom’s brother and his wife.
The restaurant was located in Manhattan across from Radio City Music Hall. Based on menu prices, the restaurant was very expensive. I don’t remember prices, but I know that my cappuccino cost $9, which is crazy.
The service was great and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was nice too. I’m sure the bill was very high but it was worth it. Everyone had a good time.
I did not get my mother a present for her birthday but I did buy her a raspberry almond croissant from Paris Baguette. She had it in the evening after the restaurant and said it was very delicious. The pastry made her very happy. I’m glad I was able to get her this treat.

Sounds like a good time was had by all.
Hospitality has gone to the dogs here, so it’s difficult to find a good restaurant that isn’t disappointing in some way.

Not all restaurants are great here either, regardless of how much they charge for their food.

@Ineeddentures my mom used to do birthdays at home. She spent a lot of time shopping for the food, then long hours preparing the food, and by the time the people would come over she’d be tired. No point in doing that when you can just go out to eat with the people you care about and have a good time without worrying about anything. And you don’t have to go out to a very expensive restaurant either. As long as the food is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the service is great it’s all that matters.

Ain't that the truth
And seldom is the food any better than one can cook at home

It sounds to me like your Mom had a wonderful birthday, I am glad the storm wasn't there yet so that you were all able to celebrate together.

I’m glad it wasn’t snowing either that day. My brother ordered a car that picked my mom and my uncle and his wife and dropped them off at the restaurant. It would’ve picked me up as well, but I went to Manhattan earlier. And then the car dropped off everybody at home. And I took advantage of that and went with them.

@MarieCoyle My brother moved to FL during the pandemic. Though he comes here a lot for work we rarely get to see him so it was nice to get together.

That was so nice, you didn't have to rely on public transportation. It sounds like you had a wonderful evening with your family.

Thank you. Going out to a restaurant to celebrate a birthday is definitely better than doing it at home. No need to shop, cook, clean, or wait on people. Everything is taken care of for you.

Thank you. I went somewhere once and it cost $7. I didn’t think it could get more expensive but turns out I was wrong.

My brother ordered everything to share. Since I don’t eat seafood, there were some things that I could not eat, but it was okay. There was still enough food for me to not leave me hungry.

My mom would always tell us when we were young that when it comes to food, nothing is expensive. But I think that applies only to those who have enough or more than enough to not consider the prices of food.
So one time my son was bragging to his aunt how much money he was able to save from buying discounted food and my sister told him, never think of the cost when it comes to food.
The most important thing is, your mom enjoyed and she was happy on her birthday. The cost of the food was nothing.

If you can easily afford to spend a lot of money on food, whether it’s buying it in the store or eating it in a restaurant, then the cost is not really a factor. You don’t think oh it’s expensive. But when money is tight, you cannot not think of the cost.

Since I don’t drive, it takes me close to an hour to get to her house. But we live in the same borough. But distance-wise, I don’t think we’re that far away.

Sometimes the small gifts are the most appreciated ones. I, too, would have been thrilled to have a nice dessert as a birthday present!

I would take a baked treat or two over an envelope stuffed with money. My mom gave me a lot of money for my birthday and I still have no idea what to do with it.

I haven’t been to a Greek restaurant in a while. Glad my brother chose that cuisine.

She turned 69 this year. Hard to believe that next year she’ll be 70.
