Welcome to March! My birthday isn’t for another month and a half, but I like to start celebrating early. There are two myLotters with birthdays today, so I’ll say happy birthday to Sandra and Amber! This isn’t exactly a happy birthday song, but it’s a great way to kick off a look back at music that’s now 50 years old.
Beat on the Brat - Ramones
Dale Watson described the Ramones perfectly: rockabilly with loud guitars.
And yes, the Ramones’ debut album is now half a century old. Wow.
Most of the Ramones’ songs weren’t really to be taken seriously. They aren’t advocating child abuse here, anymore than they were celebrating the bombing of London with the song “Blitzkrieg Bop.” (Now, “I Wanna Be Sedated” was probably true, but…
)
Here we are, 50 years after the formative years of the New York new wave/punk scene, and the contrast couldn’t be sadder. All four original Ramones have died, the oldest being 65 (drummer Tommy Ramone), most from hard living. All four members of Talking Heads, however, are in their 70s and well.
Maybe we should’ve beaten on the brats to get them to not use drugs.

Happy birthday to Amber and Sandra! March is my birthday month too, but I’m not saying which day. I don’t want a fuss made!
Hey ho, let’s go! I love Blitzkrieg Bop and I Wanna be Sedated, but I don’t remember Beat on the Brat. I’m going to listen to it now. brb…..

@FourWalls Yeah, their songs were short and sweet, but 22 in one hour is still going some. Impressive!

@Orson_Kart — never considered it a serious advocacy for child abuse, but I understand why some would be a little sensitive. I saw the Ramones in 1993 and they did 22 songs in one hour. A testament to their song structure!

I've heard a lot about the Ramones over the years; but I'm not familiar with their music, including this tune.

They didn’t get played on top 40 radio. Anyway, tin this era you were preoccupied with The Bee Gees.

I’ll tag all of these “Rebel would prefer without lyrics.”

One of my favorite songs is U2's "In a little while" which apparently was played at Joey Ramone's deathbed.

Bono said that Joey “turned a song about a hangover into something religious.” Not something you’d expect to be said about one of the Ramones.

@FourWalls yeah into a gospel song. And before he said the song was about a hangover I wouldn't have thought that either. I just liked it.

Not what you’d expect from them (doing Dylan).

I had heard a local Scottish cover band doing My Back Pages just like the Ramones did it so I wasn't shocked
The other song I liked that they did was Baby I love you,
I liked Dave Edmonds version too
