What do you think of buffets?

Some people love them, some people hate them. They have a bad reputation for over-indulgence. But on the plus side they offer a variety of foods, even healthy ones, from which you can choose and you can eat as little or as much as you want. My brother prefers buffets to sit-down meals. He likes the variety and affordability. What do you think of buffets?

I think that restaurants that have buffets attract over-eaters. I dislike them because people don't seem to have the manners that they should. I don't want food that I've had to dish out myself on a utensil used by many others. Buffet style meals held in homes is the exact opposite for me, it is easy and fun to gather. The host/hostess can better track what is being eaten and refill bowls as needed or put out fresh rolls or things as they go. It is a much nicer and more practical way of entertaining, depending on the number of people than a sit down meal, and it is easier if you just want to nibble and not eat alot.

HI, Julia!! So good to see you here. I don't like buffets, and feel the same way you do. All of those hands touching all of the serving utensils...nope, nope. Like you, I love serving buffet style at home for family, etc. You are also correct in that buffets do attract those that will eat themselves sick.

@MarieCoyle Really great to see you again also. I have seen people ill (who really should be home and not out infecting others) using buffets. I won't even eat birthday cake if a slice were not cut and a candle put on it on a separate plate for the one celebrating, to blow their candle out. Nobody wants anything to eat after someone has breathed on it do they? Our son and his wife have taught the girls that also, so when they are out they do not take cake if the candles were blown out on it. When you think about it, it really is a disgusting tradition. And as far as the utensils go, how many people drag a utensil through juices of other foods on their plate, that pick it up and then if someone has a food intolerance or an allergy to it, they just got sick innocently from using that utensil. But, for buffets at home where you would rather nibble and socialize, they are the way to go.

I don't mind buffets. Although I don't often go to one or anything like that.

I love buffets! I always feel like my money is worth it. Whenever there’s an occasion, or even when we just feel like eating out, we usually choose buffet dining. You can really eat as much as you want and there are so many choices, from main dishes to desserts. Our favorite buffet place even has a grill in the middle of the table where you can cook the meat yourself, Korean BBQ style. It makes the dining experience more fun.

I hate them. To many choices. I can't get the food myself. I have to not only take someone's time to tell me what's being offered and carry my food for me, and I hate it. Often the food itself is sub-par, depending on where you're eating. Warming palates are necessary, but suck.

There are several buffet restaurants here. Some are affordable, some are expensive. We prefer the expensive ones though we don't visit them often. Only when we missed a particular food they have. Most of the time we prefer sit down meals, especially when we have a huge family gathering.

In general, I like them and for the same reasons as your brother. When Pretty was little, we mostly ate at buffets so I wouldn't have to listen to her grumble and gripe about the foods I'd chosen to make for dinner. I always tried to make things we both liked but there was no pleasing her some days. *shrug*

I used to love going to buffets, especially those where you could eat what you wanted for one price,

I love buffets inside of a restaurant even though I do limit what I eat due to health reasons.

I love a good buffet. I like the fact that you can try new things, but only a little at a time , to see if you like it. I wouldn’t order a whole dish I wasn’t sure of in case I didn’t like it ….but being able to try a small amount is great. I think generally buffets are good value for money.

I love buffets. Many were closed after COVID. I often wonder how sanitary they are.
