I am interested …. Do people still have dinner parties ? ….have you hosted a dinner party ? What was your menu ? Why did you choose those ? Did you have entertainment ? What was it ? How many guests did you invite to your dinner party ?

@traceyjayne My parents did when we lived in Africa. I remember on one occasion there was Scottish dancing on the lawn afterwards.

@Traceyjayne I imagine it wasn’t too sophisticated. We lived in the bush with electricity for 4 hours a day and no shops for 60 miles.

I grew up with my parents hosting dinner parties frequently with as many as 200 or more quests. I do host parties once in awhile with close friends only. I prepare food (well, the maid does) that I know they'd like. No pork! My friends don't eat them. And of course drinks! Let me attach a photo of the drinks that I usually have in my party.

I know my dad and his wife have them, but not like formal ones, where people have catered meals and people wear expensive jewelry.

Nope. Dinner parties are still a thing I think world wide, especially celebrating a milestone or birthdays.

My parents did while I was growing up but I've never had a fancy dinner party. I've often had friends come over for Thanksgiving and Christmas where I had roast (or smoked) turkey, mashed and fried potatoes, casseroles and homemade breads with lots of side dishes. (My friends always brought something, most of the time desserts of different types.) Those were traditional foods when I was growing up. The most people that ever showed up was 9 or 10 people besides Pretty and I. No entertainment. We stood around or sat around and visited.

We used to have dinner parties but we don't have the room now for more tha two couples. Vince likes to cook so he spend most of the day preparing the meal. It might be a traditional meal like a roast or he might have Mongolian lamb or whatever took his fancy at the time.

I like small groups of people only four at a time. I ask everyone to bring a dish.

I used to love inviting friends around for dinner. Not formal dinner parties exactly but maybe 10 or 12 friends. I was thinking about that the other day. I guess it sort of petered out when lots of people had children and then were too busy or couldn't stay out late or whatever. The last time we had a big meal was with some local friends: ourselves and two children, two other couples with two and four children (plus a baby, but he didn't need a seat), and our two lodgers, so 16 people around the table which is about the most that can fit!

@Traceyjayne That sounds great. We never had big family gatherings when I was growing up, but whenever we did see relatives I was always grilled about what I planned to do, whether I had a boyfriend etc. so I always hated that and was glad not to have to meet lots of relatives often! I prefer friends

@Fleura I think Covid stopped a lot of our family get together and since then, sadly, we have lost so many ,….we are on the next generation down now ….my parents generation ….they range from 70 to 90. We still do have family parties but not on such a great scale. We have one in a few weeks ….a joint 80th Birthday for two of Moms cousins ….

I love that …..a big gathering of family and friends ….. I come from a large family ….on one side my Grandad was one of 6 and on the other side my Nan was the eldest of 10 so there were hundreds ( or so it seemed ) of uncles, aunts and cousins…….parties were always loads of fun and laughter …..
