I’m so glad I’m not coeliac!

As I’ve mentioned before our lodger is coeliac so if we cook for her we have to be very careful to avoid anything containing gluten. I’ve had quite a lot of success making all sorts of gluten-free things which have worked out well, but even so I breathe a sigh of relief when I can go back to ‘normal’ and eat some bread.
Because let’s face it, I love bread! And there’s a reason bread is so universal that the word is used as a euphemism for money, the ‘breadwinner’ is the person who mainly financially supports the family, and even the Bible says ‘Man cannot live by bread alone…’ (although he apparently only needs the word of God in addition to bread).
When I was growing up we used to laugh at my father because one of his favourite snacks was a slice of bread and butter; it seemed so boring when he could have had a fancy chocolate biscuit or something like that! But you know what? I appreciate it now too. Some good proper bread and real butter. Even Little One likes some when she gets back from school. Sometimes the simple things in life really are the best.
Do you like bread?

Once and a while. I'd rather have meat, potatoes, veggies and fruit.

My DIL is coeliac but they have to avoid cross-contamination if ever they eat out etc. Is this a problem for you and your lodger, or is it more an intolerance rather than a full-on allergy? At the end of a meal, my Dad would often have what he'd call 'a wad' which was a piece of bread and butter.

My Dad would often eat a full meal and then have some bread and butter shortly afterwards too!
Yes we have to avoid cross-contamination. We use separate scales, and are careful not to drop any bread-crumbs or flour near where she is eating or preparing food. If we're cooking two versions of something (with and without gluten) in the same oven then we make sure the G.F. one is covered, especially because it's a fan oven. We often don't cook meals at exactly the same time but if we do we keep to separate areas of the kitchen (and avoid sifting flour, for example!) She's been living with us over a year now and it all seems to be working out so far.

I love bread …..I do sometimes make my own…..by hand, we had a machine once but sent it back as the paddle seemed to leave huge holes in the loaf ……no one else seemed to have that problem.
Anyway, yes, it can be sliced, unsliced, crusty, bap, baguette, white, brown, wholemeal, granary, seeded,
Obviously, with real butter, and with or without a filling.

I gave up bread a few years ago. It gets stuck in my throat because it's doughy. I eat my hamburgers without buns.

I like bread a little too much. My doctor wants me to cut back on eating it.
