A lot can happen in a week

Josh Hanlon is a Australian Paralympic alpine skier. I don’t think he’s won any medals but that’s okay. He competes in ‘sitting slalom’ and ‘sitting giant slalom’. As a young(er) man, he seemed destined for a career in Australian Rules Football. When he was 20, a severe bacterial infection caused toxic shock and sepsis. He became sick on a Friday and was in a coma by Tuesday. Both lower legs were amputated and he lost his right hand. Can you imagine being fit and healthy one day and waking a week or two later to find yourself with bits missing? The photo is mine taken in France.

We're not used to being able to see from miles and miles like this. It was really quite new to us.

Poor young guy, I feel so sorry for him. You are healthy and suddenly something like this happens. Beautiful photo.

The suddenness of it is quite frightening I'm sure. Imagine his parents waiting for news while he is in a coma.

AFL football is a big thing in Australia. He would have been expecting to be picked by one of the big teams.

That tells you just how uncertain and fragile life really is. I’m thankful he decided to continue with a career and plays in the Paralympic Games.

I think he fell in his first two events. They are going at such speed they skid for hundreds of yards.

That would be horrible. I'm glad he has overcome his disability and is competing in sports. Lovely picture.

It would have been such a shock to have that happen in such a short time.

It is indeed. I don't think I'd be half so brave.

That would be a huge shock. Especially at that young age.

I've read/ heard so many stories like that. Believe me, every single day that I am still able to do normal things I really appreciate it!

It does make you grateful when you read some of these awful stories.
