A warning about melatonin products

I’ve never taken melatonin products but about a month ago the Australian Border Force confiscated 150,000 units of melatonin. These imported products were unregistered and had come into the country legally but, after testing, significant discrepancies were found between the actual melatonin content as opposed to what was on the label. Some products had four times the amount of melatonin that was listed on the label. The imported products, whether tablets, capsules or gummies, are much cheaper than those from pharmacies. However, over the last twelve months, there has been a dramatic increase in calls made to poisons hotlines regarding children and melatonin ingestion. There is always something to worry about, isn’t there? The photo is mine of Blue. He looks like he might have had too much melatonin.

I used to take Melatonin when I was under a lot of stress at a job. It did help me sleep but left me groggy the next day.

@JudyEv I was always fighting my natural inclination to stay awake at night and sleep during the daytime. I'm glad I don't have to fight that inclination anymore.

@DaddyEvil Vince stresses a bit about not sleepiing but I tell him we can always during the day - or any time we want.

It seems to be quite popular here. A lot of people don't sleep well.

that is why we should be careful in what we are buying. Brand matters

It does indeed. And imagine jeopardising your children's health with it.

I recently read a story where an Aussie character was called Blue, because he had red hair... just like your little kitty there.

Yes, a lot of red-headed men are called Blue here, hence our kitten's name.

Without the recommended composition, it is certainly not good if consumed for a long time.

That’s frightening to think of. Melatonin does not work on me, but I know plenty of people who do take it.

It's criminal to think they'd sell it without the correct ingredient count.

He does but let's hope not. It's been years that I don't take any supplements at all. I have not taken anything with melatonin.

@JudyEv I have never tried anything to help me sleep. I don't know why I have always been afraid to take any supplement for sleeping without consulting a doctor.

What an adorable kitty cat Blue is. I never needed a sleep aid, but one should always be cautious where they purchase their meds and what is in them.

@JudyEv One would definitely expect trust in these companies. To me, a trusted brand is essential. Sorry for the late responses. I’ve been so overwhelmed lately with lack of myLot time.

It's not safe to take such tablets or medicines. I think they shouldn't allow such medicines in your country.

It is the ones that are being bought online and shipped into the country that are the main problem. Taking properly in the correct amounts, it's probably safe enough.

I avoid taking melatonin because I’m scared about potential harm to my kidneys or side effects. By the way, Blue definitely looked like he is taking melatonin. Haha

I always worry about the actual content of medications, vitamins, supplements and similar items, versus the stated content. In the US, much of that industry is not regulated at all, and so there can be all kinds of discrepancies in what a product says its ingredients are versus what you are actually getting. For that reason, I try to avoid things like that if I can.

@JudyEv There’s no doubt there are some trusted companies out there, and I’m sure they are very successful because of that. But it’s getting harder and harder to find trustworthy businesses these days.
