Gary Cooper and Gone With The Wind

Gary Cooper was a top choice for the part of Rhett Butler in this epic movie, Gone With The Wind. Why I don't understand. His stoic actor persona doesn't seem to fill the bill at all. Errol Flynn and even Ronald Coleman were thought of for it too. But, funny about Cooper. He down right refused the roll saying he felt it would be a big flop and he was glad Clark Gable would fall flat on his face and not him. I think Clark was the perfect choice. And who could come any where near thinking GWTW would be a flop is beyond me.
What do you think?

I read the book but never watched the movie. It was okay.

The movie was an epic. Not a favorite by any means.

Even though Gary Cooper and Clark Gable are before my time, Clark was the best actor to play Rhett Butler in the movie.

I agree. Cooper doesn't fit the character at all.

Personally I think there could have bee no other choice but Clark Gable. I read the book, and I picture him as Rhett.
