Doing taxes alone

Since my husband did not contact me about doing a joint income tax return this year, I decided I’m gonna file on my own. My status will be married filing separately. It’ll take me at least 1 1/2 hours one way to get to the place that I used to go to with my husband and about the same to get home. I decided to go there because they have our joint return from last year so if any information is needed from last year’s return, they have access to it. Since this is not a joint to return, they needed to create a new file for me and asked me to fill out a lot of information and submit it on their website. One of the things they asked for was my birthday. I tried to enter the date, but I wasn’t able to do so. I pressed the numbers but nothing was typing. I clicked on the calendar icon next to that text box and a calendar appeared showing March 2026. There was no option to select my birth year. What I had to do was click the left arrow until I got to 1982. Had to do a lot of clicking on that arrow because it’s over three decades worth of years to go through and then 12 months in each year to get to my birthday. I was hoping I would not have to file a tax return for 2025 since I did not work in 2025. However, we have joint bank accounts that earned interest that has to be reported. Since I am the primary person on these accounts I am responsible for reporting any interest earned on them. We used to pay somewhere in the $200s to do our taxes so I’m assuming the same will be true for me this time around. I doubt I will get any return. I will probably have to pay something for that bank interest. I wonder if I will owe federal, state, or both.

It would be nice to live in a state that doesn’t have state income tax.

Yes. Unfortunately that’s not the case here.

Good luck! I always had to pay around $150 to get my income taxes done at H&R Block. Pretty does our taxes now and paid about $100 to do them online.

@DaddyEvil I wonder if there is a price difference between filing a joint return or doing married filing separately.

I’d love to pay under $200 but doubt that will happen.

Hopefully things go well for you with this. It's not always fun having to file our taxes, but it's something we got to do sometimes.

I was hoping to avoid it but no choice. I think if there was no bank interest I would not need to file.

Sometimes online forms are the fits to try to fill in.

I don’t know if it was because I was doing it on my phone as opposed to a computer, but putting in the date of birth was frustrating. Whoever designed the form did not test it properly.

@LindaOHio if it’s easy, why do many go to an accountant?

Wow you still have a joint bank account even though you do not live together. Strange

We have two actually. No money gets taken out of them by either of us. I theoretically can take half of our money and move it to a different account that is solely mine, however, I cannot close our joint accounts because I would need him present with me to be able to do that. If I take my half only and leave his in those joint accounts, my name is still on it so I’m still responsible for them.

@Ineeddentures One account has only a few hundred dollars. The other one has a good amount in it. I don’t know why we don’t take money from there.

@lovebuglena Why does no money get taken out of the accounts by either of you? Have they got large balances?
