My son met with his online friend at the mall last month. It was his first time meeting up without Mom or the family. But of course, I was there. No, the whole family was with him until the mall, then we left him at the cafe shop where they would meet. We had to spy a little from a distance, just to make sure everything was okay. We tried to act casual, walking around like we had our own business, but our eyes kept going back to him. Thankfully, everything went well. They talked, laughed, and seemed comfortable with each other. It felt both strange and nice to see him becoming more independent. I guess this is one of those “letting go little by little” moments for us parents. Before I was convinced to let him do this, it was because I could read their conversations on Discord. I made sure the person he was talking to was genuine and respectful. That gave me a bit of peace of mind, although I still couldn’t help but worry. As a mom, you try to protect them as much as you can, but at the same time, you have to trust them and allow them to grow.

You did the right thing..there are so many evil people online and one need to be careful of the kind of friends we let into our live. I'm glad your son had a good time with his friend

You were smart every step of the way, and I commend you. Way too many parents give their children free rein, and their children end up in unhealthy situations. I really admire how you parented in this situation.

He needs guidance more than ever. He has mild autism. He is socially awkward brought about the pandemic

That was a good way to handle the meet-up between your son and his online friend. I'm glad things worked out well for them.

Yes, I'm glad that it went well too. It triggered something in my son. I felt that he matured a bit and now he wants to explore more in the outside world

That's a sensible way to deal with this situation. How old is your son?

@JudyEv yes, that is true and I do not trust the world around him. There are people who will take advantage of him and he is not that mature enough to realize that

He is 17, has autism and introvert. He is actually socially awkward to people he does not know.

@rakski In that case, this is a great idea for your son. It's very hard for some to meet people and make friends.

Parenting these days is even harder with all the worry that come with our kids being on social media. I'm glad it all turned out well for your son at the mall but you were wise to make sure you kept an eye out from a distance. So many parents these days just drop their kids off and let them wander through the mall for hours without any supervision.

It was his first 'alone time' I don't want to spoil it but I won't allow bad things come his way, inexperienced as he is. With the cruel world and evil people around You are right, with social media, it's scarier

That’s being a great mother. One never really knows the people they meet online, and it’s good that you had his best interests at heart. Glad the meeting went well.

That's very true. And also a good communication from a parent and child is a good thing as well so one can easily open up on something.
