I watched Crime and Punishment. It is based on the book by Fyodor Dostoevsky which I am listening to. It has Peter Lorre, Edward Arnold, Marian Marsh, Elisabeth Risdon, Robert Allen, Gene Lockhart, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, and Edith Arnold in it.` Big Warning: there is some violence. In this movie, a man named Roderick Raskolnikov was a student. He had written an article in a newspaper about the common criminal. He had sent the money to his mother and sister. He owned rent. So he was going to pawn a watch his father gave him. He encountered a woman who was pawning her bible. The Pawnbroker wouldn't let her pawn it. Roderick did pawn the watch and ended up giving the money away to the woman's younger siblings. (In the book he overhears in a bar another guy talking about murdering the pawnbroker and taking everything she has.) But in this movie, he decides to kill her. (In the book, he kills her with an axe.) In this movie, he kills her with a fireplace poker. He takes everything, but leaves a box behind which holds a necklace. A painter in the same building sees the necklace and tries to pawn it. The police picks up Roderick because of his rent he owes. The police chief likes Roderick's article and asks him for advice on the murder of the pawn broker. Roderick finds out the painter is the suspect. He does pay the rent with his friend's help. He also gets money by demanding pay from the editor of the newspaper. (In the book, he gets money from his mother) In the end, guilt sets in and he falls for the woman he helped. He goes to the police to confess which the police chief was ready for him. I sorta liked this movie. The ending was really weird. I'm watching the other 1935 movie of Crime and Punishment. It's a French version.

Good summary! I have never read Crime and Punishment. Russian novels tend to be so dang long. I did make it through War and Peace, though.

i always thought, call me dark that she deserved it, this old lady. i hate when poor people have it hard while other are taking advantage of them and their situations. but, attacking her with the axe, that was personal, i feel. i like some french movies so i hope you would like the french version.

This is supposed to be a real classic - or perhaps the book is - but I haven't seen it.
