A big mistake

When I got married in 2016, I took on my husband‘s last name. That meant that I had to update my last name in different places. One of them was the Social Security card.
I went to the Social Security office to update my last name on my Social Security card and to also get rid of the phrase on it that said something along the lines of INS authorization required for work. While I was there it turned out that in the system it did not say that I was a US citizen.
I found that very strange because I was in fact a US citizen. And for a long time. I had to provide them with my certificate of citizenship to prove that I was in fact a US citizen. I still don’t understand how this mix-up could’ve happened. It just makes no sense.

That is odd indeed, but the system is not perfect. Sometimes it could be something as simple as an input error, or a glitch in the system, or someone putting a wrong code in. Mistakes happen. At least they didn't try to deport you!

They wouldn’t be able to do that anyway because I was a legal resident but it’s crazy that this error existed.

@lovebuglena That hasn't stopped ICE over the past several months.

That's the thing, mistakes happen and I wonder how many people who are actually authorized to be here, are being tossed out. It's stupid.

That would be a real nuisance having to provide proof every time you wanted to go somewhere.

Thanks. And it is weird that I didn’t know about it until I went to change my name.
