It Made My Feet Swell

Hey all, I had to stop taking the extra-high doses of ibuprofen my doctor said to try. I normally take either one or two 200mg tablets of ibuprofen (Advil) if I have a headache or other kind of pain, and it usually works fine. When I saw my doctor about my hip, he prescribed prednisone but said I could also try the ibuprofen at a "prescription dose", which is 800mg, three times a day! I gamely swallowed four tablets at a time for two or three times per day, but after doing this for a little over a week, my hip didn't seem any better at all, and I had a weird and annoying side effect - my feet and even my lower legs swelled up and were very uncomfortable. My feet felt itchy, probably because my skin was stretching. Since it was already halfway through the 9th day and he had said only to do it for 10 days, I gave up. My feet had been really bothering me, and I noticed that my calves had swollen, too, and the skin was tight. What a bothersome side effect! Maybe I could have put up with it if the medication worked, but alas, it didn't. I will have to try the prednisone. I've taken that before with no ill effects. I am just waiting for a couple of days for the ibuprofen to clear my system. My calves don't feel tight any more, but my feet are still poofy. I know y'all dont wanna see my poofy feet and I don't want to show them, so here's a photo of my cat sleeping in a box with her nose tucked in.

Thank you! They're still poofy, but I'm still hoping.

I’d rather see your cat sleeping in a box instead of your poofy feet It sounds like you were wise to stop taking the 800mg pills. I hope your swelling goes down quickly. Feel better soon.

@AliCanary I love how her face is pressed against the box. Kitty cats are the best!

@DianneN I know, I thought it was so cute. She likes it to be dark when she sleeps, so she was probably trying to shut out the light. She's very happy to crawl under a blanket, too

I do like the picture of your cat!!! A couple of decades ago my doctor prescribed me that 800mg of Ibuprofen 3x a day. I took it with food, just as instructed. Not only did it not work, it gave me two ulcers. I was so annoyed. I’m really sorry you experienced such an unpleasant side effect.

@AliCanary That was incredibly irresponsible of them. That much Ibuprofen can really mess up your stomach.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry that happened to you. That is a side effect I knew about. I didn't take mine with food bc I wasn't instructed to do that. Hm. I'm just annoyed that my feet are still swollen two days later :/

@AmbiePam maybe so. It's just over-the-counter ibuprofen and so there weren't any specific directions on the bottle like you get with a prescription. He just told me the right dosage to take. I've never had issues with it before, but of course, I've never taken a huge amount before. I'm a bit of a nibbler, though, and there's probably always a bit of food in my stomach, tbh!

Oh my goodness, I am surprised your doctor told you to take so much Ibuprofen, more than 1200 mg per day is not considered safe. I hope your swelling goes down. You have a cute fluffy cat.

What's worse is that it didn't help at all, sadly. My feet are almost completely back to normal now, at least. I hope my stomach is okay. I will start the prednisone tomorrow. Thank you, she's quite a handful, lol

The prednisone didn't work either, dang it, so I went in this morning for a cortisone shot directly into the joint, which was...an experience. It hasn't seemed to change much, yet, but I'm willing to give it time. They signed me up for physical therapy, too.

She loves to be in a box or perched on top of her cat tree, watching "Squirrel TV" out the back widow.

I just love that photo. Cats love boxes, don't they? I hope there are no long-lasting effects from the Ibuprofen.

@JudyEv today my body must have decided to give up all that retained water, because I had to visit the loo half a dozen times this morning!

They sure do! Even big cats like lions and tigers love boxes. Fortunately the swelling has down quite a lot and my feet look almost normal - just a touch of poofiness.

the cat is so cute and tiny; how old is he or she? whenever swelling starts, that's a bad sign. i'm glad you spotted this on time but sorry it didn't help you.

Lol, she's actually HUGE (the box is quite large). Here's a pic of my husband holding her for scale. She will be 8 years old in August. I was kind of dumb about the swelling. I felt fine otherwise, so it didn't bother me that much. My husband was pretty freaked out about it, though.
