One important part of my work in the foster care home is helping children with their school lessons. I have to help them in all their subjects. But I love helping them with their mathematics and English. This evening, I spent two hours helping them grasp the concepts of numbers. They come from different backgrounds and with different level of capabilities. I have to be as sensitive and empathetic as possible to them. I am glad to see their progress, evei if slow. However, I have to be alert to protect them from discouraging factors. Some teachers in their schools have only complaints to speak of them. One of the children was described as "disaster" by a coworker. I have to keep a large reserve of encouragement and motivation to support them. At the end of the day, I dream they will all be able to get through their higher secondary school at least. That will open doors for them to some technical or professional training, which in turn will help them earn their livelihood. Though I sometimes dream of them acquiring higher degree of success. But.. hurdles are high and many!

Teachers who speak negatively to students shouldn't be teachers. Children need all the support we can give them.

You do them such a service to never give up on them. You provide a needed service, but you do it with compassion and encouragement. What you do, and how you do it, can lead to a student staying on course to finish their education. I hope you know how wonderful that is.

Those children are so lucky to have you to look out for them and help them. Some teachers can be very discouraging and even quite unkind.
