Song For the Soldiers

The best song of 1917 was a patriotic song composed by George M. Cohan and was an effective and rallying song of support for soldiers sent overseas. It was “Over There." I loved the version of this song in the movie “Yankee Doodle Dandy” about the life of Cohan starring James Cagney.
In 1917 it became a popular song with the U.S. military and with the public during both World Wars. Cohan wrote the song in the year that the U.S. entered WW I on the side of the Allies. Troops were being sent to Europe.
When the song was introduced to the public in the autumn of 1917, it was performed at a Red Cross benefit in New York City. The song sold well over two million copies. On June 29, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt awarded Cohan the Congressional Gold Medal for this song and others of his patriotic songs.
James Cagney gave a rousing performance of the song in “Yankee Doodle Dandy," and the actor won an Oscar for his portrayal of George M. Cohan.
Do any of you know this song? Have any of you seen the musical?

@DianneN see if you can find the musical with James Cagney; I know you'll enjoy it. Put on the musical, grab a martini, and stick in a stirrer with an American flag.

@RasmaSandra

I am drinking my martini right now and drank too much too fast. Hubs is disgusted with me, but I was so thirsty
I definitely will. Hubs loves that sort of stuff very much, too.
