Humpy Hapday! Or something like that.
It’s time to go back 60 years to 1966 as I wind down the celebration of my birthday earlier this month. Today’s some shows the evolution of country-rock, or “how we got the Eagles.”
Here’s today’s song.
#9: Go and Say Goodbye - Buffalo Springfield
Buffalo Springfield broke up and, from them, came Poco. And from Poco came the idea of the Eagles (not to mention both of the Eagles’ bass players
).
Most people know Buffalo Springfield from their one massive hit, “For What It’s Worth” (which you probably don’t know by that title, but you would know it from its chorus of “Stop, children, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down”). They really did much more in their very short career than “For What It’s Worth” and spawning both Poco and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young (since Stephen Stills and Neil Young were both members, and Stills wrote this song). There’s some great music in their discography, including that classic Young song “Expecting to Fly.”
I have to say that I’m thrilled that, of the spinoff bands from Buffalo Springfield, Poco covered this song. I can’t imagine Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young doing this…even if Stills did write it.
Go and Say Goodbye

I had never even heard of Buffalo Springfield before
And obviously had no idea about the link to the Eagles.
I must have been sleeping in the Hotel California

Secret to Hotel California: just leave, don’t check out.

@Ineeddentures — the song says you can’t leave after you check out, so just leave and mail them the key.

Hubby couldn't quite name the group on this song but knew he recognized the voice, so I played him their main hit, which we both know and he nailed it.
