Weird Noise

Hey all, a couple of days ago, I noticed a weird, low-pitched humming noise when I was sitting in my bedroom reading. It sounded like it was coming from out behind my house and that it was pretty loud. It lasted for maybe 10 seconds or so and then stopped.
I couldn't decide what it was. Something mechanical. People doing some sort of landscaping work? It sounded like it could be a deep, rumbling engine noise. Some sort of big truck running? We live near a small airport that is owned by the city for the use of police and fire, and sometimes military stuff comes in. Could it be a plane or a helicopter?
I heard it again, several more times. It sounded like it was cycling, so I eliminated vehicles, flying or otherwise, unless it was a truck idling. It seemed more likely to be some sort of equipment. Could be people working, still. But then I heard it later, at night, like LATE at night. Obviously not people working. And sometimes it would go for a lot shorter period of time, like just a couple of seconds.
Of course, I did consider that it might be coming from something in my own house or even from my own ears. I've had tinnitus before, although that was a high-pitched noise, not a low one. However, I never heard the noise when I was in my studio (which doesn't face the rear of the house), in my car, or at my friend's house, where I went for gaming yesterday. And when I came back home from gaming, I heard it when I was downstairs, too, so that eliminated my thought that it might be something in my bedroom, like the fan or the hvac system.
So, I'm flummoxed. I can't try to hunt down the noise when I hear it, because it doesn't last long enough for me to get up and go outside, especially if I'm upstairs. The only thing I could possibly think to do is to just hang out for a while outside and see if I hear it again and try to figure out where it's coming from.
The one weird thing is that it seems like wherever it's coming from, it must be pretty loud, so I wonder how many other people in my neighborhood are also trying to figure out--what the heck is that NOISE?

I heard some weird beeping like an electronic noise coming from outside the house one time, but it seemed like it was very close..and I don't think I ever figured out what it was. It didn't recur to my knowledge though. Another day there was a low hum from the modem, or router..but it went away..so oh well, one of those things I guess. You could probably check with someone outside the house and see if they heard it.

Yes, I was thinking about asking on my neighborhood Facebook group. I actually heard it in from my studio this morning while it was quiet (I usually play music or a podcast while I work), but I'm not hearing it this afternoon. Maybe it stopped, or I got used to it.

@snowy22315 did it sound like it could have been one of those back-up alarms on a vehicle? They are usually a beeping noise. Pretty loud on things like garbage trucks, but maybe quieter on a delivery van. I think maybe minivans even have them, sometimes.

We have a restaurant catty-corner and across the street from our house. I hear semis over there all the time delivering different foods or the trash truck picking up garbage over there. There's a truck idling over there right now. Sometimes the box trailer it's pulling also adds its own hum to the mix when the semi truck isn't idling.
I think the restaurant just added some new equipment or changed out some of their equipment. The last few days I've heard a high pitched hum from over there. *shrug* I just haven't been curious enough to try to figure that one out.
I also have tinnitus that sounds like cicadas. Of course, Pretty can't hear that and tells me I'm weird because I hear that most of the time.
I used to check to see what the noises were when we first moved into this house but have finally figured out what all the weird-to-me sounds are here so I stopped looking.

@AliCanary Yup! I only notice them now if there's a different sound or if they aren't happening when I normally expect them to happen.

I'll bet those noises really faded into the background once you figured out what they all were. I could see that happening to me with this one.

That's a good idea. I also thought about maybe posting the question in the Facebook group for my neighborhood.

Oh, interesting idea - I didn't think to do that. It's only been going for a couple of seconds at a time recently, so I don't think I could get my phone in time, but maybe if it lasts a little longer, I could.

@Ineeddentures I'm not hearing it any more, so either it was someone's a/c compressor and it's not running now (it's gotten a bit colder) or whatever it was was fixed because it was making so much noise.

I wouldn't mind hearing it
You should maybe ask neighbours after all.

i'm sorry. i also hate when i have to track the noise and it seems impossible and, sadly, people make all sort of noise.

I feel like this was something that might have been happening by itself, like an air conditioner compressor.

My tinnitus sounds have changed over the years. Most of the time it sounds like the tone in a weather radio alert but it has sounded like other things.

When I first got it, it was a very high-pitched ringing that intensified when someone was talking or there was another specific noise, like it was trying to outdo the other noise. Fun, right? But now I don't hear it any more at all. I have read that it doesn't go away because the damage to the cilia is permanent, but I really don't hear it at all that I can tell. Might be one of those noises that's too high-pitched to hear when you're older than 30.

It could bees, or something in the walls. A few years ago my mother and I heard some beeping noise. I thought it was the smoke detectors going off, but it was a leak detection machine saying it needed new batteries.

I didn't hear it last night or today, so I guess it's been resolved some way.

I don't suppose it's a swarm of bees moving in? It doesn't sound the right noise really. If it comes sort of regularly, it might be worth waiting outside to see what happens. It's not something loose that vibrates when conditions are right? Keep us posted.

Yes, sometimes I wake up thinking I heard a noise, but it was actually in my dream!

Cousin #2 had the same problem. She even went outside and listened for the noise. She never figured out what it was. Now she has moved.

Too late!
