Since I wrote about Fred Hollows and his sight-saving cataract surgery, I’ve had a lot of ads promoting his foundation. Fred's son, Dr Cam Hollows, appears on the ads so I wondered if he was now working for the foundation but it seems not. I found an interesting news item about Cam from four years ago. He was/is a general practitioner in rural NSW. When floods hit the Coraki region, Cam set up a pop-up field hospital in the town. A helicopter took him to the town, along with medicines from his hospital and private equipment that he had in the back of his car. As he is a scuba instructor, he had an oxygen bottle and resuscitation equipment. He set up a bunk in front of the field hospital and looked after whoever needed help. One of the grateful patients was a man who almost died from a heart attack amid the flood disaster. Cam Hollows started out as a marine biologist but turned to medicine after contracting malaria in Papua New Guinea. From all I can gather, he doesn’t actually work for the Hollows Foundation. The photo is mine.

A great service to the needy! Many in the medical profession are now more keen about making money. Yet such people do their best to uplift lives of other people.

@JudyEv Yes. In this respect I had a case of highly selfish and careless doctor whose wrong diagnosis led me to a lot of trouble.

@JudyEv Yes and I had almost a week where I felt uneasy. It affected both my work and family life. Plus my kids were very small then and life had stress of other kinds then.

Some doctors have no thought for their patients beyond getting them in and out the door and getting paid.

Those flowers are beautiful, I remember one was part of a bouquet I received as a present. Cam Hollow surely is a very good guy and I imagine very appreciated.

I think it's a protea, a native African plant, although it's very similar to our banksias.

@LadyDuck Proteas grow well in Australia as our climate is similar to parts of Africa.

The town was badly affected by the flood and I'm sure there would have been a lot of minor injuries.

Edified to know the story of Dr. Cam Hollows. Hoping my child will grow with similar values.

He was set an excellent example by his father and mother. I'm sure you're doing the same there with your children. How many now have chicken pox?
