Mayon Volcano has made a major eruption this time

Several months ago, I posted about the Mayon Volcano eruption, but after a period of quiet, an unexpected eruption occurred on May 2 without any prior warning. Thick black or brown smoke covered the entire mountain and slid down its slopes, obscuring it from view, while sand and dust rained on nearby towns. At the time, I was in Naga City, far from the site, and unaware of the event until my wife asked if I knew about it. I only learned the details upon returning to my hotel and checking the internet. Some say this is the worst eruption since the 1970s and 80s, though reports indicate that a portion of the summit gave way, triggering a larger eruption. The real danger, however, may come during the rainy season, when lahar deposits on the slopes could be washed down. Such flows, mixed with water, can be far more destructive to property than the current slow-moving lava flows, which are easier to avoid.

I am not sure yet if there were. However, as far as I know, the people in that area have already been informed and know what to do in the event of a major eruption. As of this writing, it appears that there has been a lull in summit activity, and Mount Mayon is once again visible and serene. But Philvolcs has remained vigilant, causing the alert level to remain at #3.

@rakski As I've been monitoring its volcanic activity over the last few days, I've noticed that eruptions continue to occur on some days. But not as big as last weekend. So dangerous is still present in that area, and Philvolcs is maintaining its alert level of 3 at this time because you can't predict what will happen in the next few days.

Let's hope everyone is safely away from the eruptions and landslides this year.

@rsa101 I'm glad it's only property damage so far. Hopefully, that's all it will be.

@DaddyEvil The people there are well aware of how to respond in such situations. My province is frequently affected by typhoons during the rainy season and, from time to time, by volcanic eruptions. As a result, the residents are highly informed and prepared when it comes to dealing with these types of natural disasters.

I sincerely hope that the Mayon volcano does not erupt further, as its recent activity has raised significant concerns among local residents and authorities. As of today, the situation appears to have calmed down unexpectedly, with the volcano showing signs of reduced activity. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether this lull indicates that the eruption is truly over or if the volcano is merely in a temporary resting phase before potentially erupting again.

As long as the rainfall is insufficient to move the debris, it could gradually be carried down the slope without causing harm; however, if there is a sudden downpour and the water volume becomes excessive, it could result in devastating floods.

I saw it on TV and that was a pretty scary thing. Hope everyone around that place is safe.

So far, I have not heard of any casualties in that eruption. Lava is still spewing out, but there has been no violent eruption that has thrown debris into the air, endangering nearby areas. Mayon has been known to erupt peacefully, resulting in a slow flow of lava from its summit. That is why it has an almost perfect cone shape, and only the immediate surroundings of the area are affected.
