He cut his beard and I didn't even notice

We had a heavy shower at midnight. I was really scared of the heavy wind. This morning it rained a light drizzle. That delayed me a little. It was almost midday before I stepped out of the house.
This morning I saw a friend who keeps a long beard and plaits his hair but I noticed something different about his face.
The funny thing is I couldn't figure out what was different until he pointed out that he had cut his beard. What I don't understand is why I didn't notice that his long beard was gone.
I just knew their was something different about his look. It's strange how cutting a long beard can change someone's appearance 100%

Sometimes we are so used to people that even if something changes in our eyes they always appear the same,

I try to notice those things about close friends. They always expect you to say something about a change in appearance.
It's not unusual for men not to notice small changes in their friends' appearances, though. Did he think you should have noticed the difference?

It really does change the appearance! If my husband shaved his mustache, it would really weird me out, lol. Did he say why he changed it?
