Can’t make this up

Our Russian grocery store has a club card. You use it to get discounts on items that are on sale. If you are a senior citizen there’s a special card for that that gives you more discounts on certain days of the week on certain items.
During checkout my mom gave my dad’s senior club card but she wasn’t able to use it because apparently they check IDs now when using the senior card. The person that’s on the card is the one that’s supposed to provide the ID. Since my dad is no longer here that’s not possible.
My mom told the cashier that the person on the card is her husband and that he passed away. She was told that she cannot use the card. Someone else from the store told the cashier to just add my mother to the account. The cashier replied that she needs my dad’s permission to do that. How in the world is he supposed to do that when he’s dead?
I guess she will just have to sign up for her own card. Otherwise, not only can she not get special discounts on certain days, but the items that are on sale she will end up paying full price for.
Oddly enough, when she presented my dad’s club card at a different location of the same store, no one asked for her ID or told her she cannot use the card. And our store never asked for ID either. I wonder if it’s a new policy or the cashier just didn’t know what she was doing.

I would say you should be allowed to use your husband’s store card. The only question is how do you prove that this is your husband’s card?

@JudyEv the best thing for her is just to get her own card. Apparently you can sign up online. I don’t know how long it takes for you to get the card after you sign up.

I’d reckon she asked for ID to make sure my mom is actually a senior citizen. Like I shouldn’t be allowed to use a senior store card as I am not a senior.

And I think this happened more than once already.

Perhaps she was new. Or maybe it is a new policy to check ID to make sure the person is really a senior citizen.

I hope your mom applies for her own card. It will make things much easier.
