Keeping the Shutters Closed

United States

You'll recall that we got plantation shutters on our windows inside the house about 6 weeks ago. I like things bright, open, airy, and light. But Summer is here and along with it comes the oppressive heat. So I'm experimenting by closing the shutters around 4 pm which is the hottest part of the day. It has drastically lowered the temperature in the house and will most definitely improve our utility bills. I'll just have to get used to the darkness. The shutters are open now in the early morning.

I recommend those “sun-like” lights for when the shutters are closed. The good thing about a house is I have windows on all sides, so I can have the east-facing things open in the afternoon.

Having the house dark and cool in mid summer will probably be fine.

Shutters sound like such a good idea and I bet it will definitely help with that afternoon oppressive heat. When that late afternoon sun is strong I close my window blinds and it does help.
