A 74 year old Canadian man who aboard a sailboat that was in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday was located around 489 miles off of the coast of Tillamook Oregon when the sailboat had mechanical problems due to sailing in high winds which knocked out the engine. The mariner managed to use his experience to contact the United States from equipment that he had aboard, Coast Guard (USCG) which received a message from the boater.. The USCG Northwest District Search sent a C-27J Spartan aircraft from Sacramento California to serve as an eye in the sky while activating the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Research (AMVER) to assist search efforts. Cruise ship Silver Whisperer went to rescue the 74 year old man where crews were able to get the man out of the disabled ship and get him medical attention on board as the ship traveled to Vancouver. The mariner was traveling by himself from Hilo Hawaii to Vancouver when he needed to be rescued. Link is msn.com/en-us/news/us/...

At least he had the right equipment on board to get help.

At least, the sailor had the right equipment on board to convey his predicament to the Coast Guard. Perhaps, he was too inexperienced to cope with such a problem himself, and in that case, he was somewhat foolhardy to try to travel that type of distance in a small boat on his own.
