Happy June! In America, it’s the start of meteorological summer, and it’s also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. In myLot land, it’s the start of two countdowns to celebrate Sir Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday later this month. This first countdown features songs that namedrop the Beatles or one of them. And here we go! All the Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople Name dropping central here. We have T Rex and the Stones in addition to the Beatles being mentioned. Then you have David Bowie writing the song and the band named after a 1966 novel, and it’s enough to send you into a rabbit hole. (Well, enough to send me into one. ) Bowie wrote the song for Mott the Hoople because he heard they were about to break up after a few years of lackluster sales and success. Bowie persuaded them to stay together. He initially offered “Suffragette City” to the band, then gave them this song. He even produced the album. The combination worked. “All the Young Dudes” became Mott the Hoople’s biggest international hit and made them the poster children for glam rock (despite T Rex being around longer, even to the point of being name checked in this song!). Ian Hunter went on to have a relatively successful solo career. He’ll be 87 on Wednesday (no kidding!!), a remarkable age for a man who sang this song with its opening line about how kids “don’t want to stay alive when you’re 25.” All the Young Dudes Written by David Bowie Recorded by Mott the Hoople From All the Young Dudes, 1972 BEATLE REFERENCE LYRICS: My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones

@fourwalls Excellent song that conjures a bad time for me. I was 14 - everything was bad.

What a kind thing for David Bowie to do for a group he enjoyed. I hadn’t heard this song.

The Beatles gave a song to the Rolling Stones, too. I’m glad Mott passed on “Suffragette City,” because I can’t really imagine anyone but Bowie singing that.

It’s the start of meteorological summer here in the UK too, but we had the summer heat last week, and now it’s turned much cooler with plenty of rain. Someone didn’t get the memo! The early 70’s is when I really started getting into music and I know this song well. David Bowie was a big deal around this time and you can tell he wrote it. Bizarre lyrics, but very unique. Can’t say it’s in my top ten of anything (apart from my favourite Mott the Hoople songs ), but still very listenable after all these years. A great reference to The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones though. The rivalry that never was.

@FourWalls Typical of Paul. I mean, Mick Jagger inducted The Beatles into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and you can see how much admiration he had for them in his speech. It was a great time for British music back in the early sixties, so plenty of room for both. Aren’t we the lucky ones!

I was watching an interview with Paul last week and he joked about that “rivalry” between the two. He said he played on the most recent Stones album and thought, “Wow, I’m playing with the Rolling Stones!”

I always love finding things like this. I’d never known about their name until one day it bugged me how they got the name “Mott the Hoople,” and next thing you know, I’m boring all of you with the story!

Wow, that's a fun fact! Interesting that this was written when Mott the Hoople almost broke up, given that this song is the reason I even know about Mott the Hoople!

Lucky break for us all. I prefer “Roll Away the Stone,” but it wasn’t a hit here in America, so very few people agreed with me.

@FourWalls I don't know that one, but it sounds interesting. Why is something telling me that you're about to post an Alan Sherman link in a couple days?

Yes we recognized the song but we couldn't guess the group. Although we know who this group is. And the song had a very heavy David Bowie influence in it.
