At the beginning, in the teaser, I warned you that there’d be country music. It didn’t take long, alphabetically speaking, to make good on that threat, did it! That means our first “Linda? NO!” warning of the month, and — shocker — a relatively new song! American Saturday Night - Brad Paisley So here you not only have a Beatles reference in a country song, but a pretty rockin’ Beatles reference in a country song! We aren’t talking “Act Naturally” (the Buck Owens song that the Beatles covered on Yesterday and Today) here. Nope, it’s their 1968 song “Back in the USSR” getting the shout-out. You’re probably surprised that I’m using something from an era when Hank Williams was not alive. Brad Paisley is a great instrumentalist. This just isn’t the country music I call “country music.” I’m not saying this isn’t good, just that it sounds more like it belongs on side two of the Eagles’ On the Border album (between “James Dean” and “Ol’ 55,” or maybe on side one after “My Man” ) than on my country playlist between Lefty Frizzell and George Jones. (Actually, I do have a playlist for songs that sound like this, I call it “crock,” as in “country-rock.”) A little humor (“Everywhere has something that they’re known for, ah but usually it washes up on our shore”) about the international flavor of our lives here in the good ol’ U.S.A. American Saturday Night Written by Brad Paisley, Kelley Lovelace, and Ashley Gorley Recorded by Brad Paisley From American Saturday Night, 2009 BEATLE REFERENCE LYRICS: Listening to the Beatles singing “Back in the USSR”

Yeah, I don't know this one. I don't even think I've heard any of his songs, honestly. I think I've seen him in commercials, though.

Yeah, he’ll be in the Country Music Hall of Fame for his commercials more than his music.

This song came out shortly before I turned 13, so I associate this song with my teenage years, and singing along, and really embracing my inner musician.

t’s interesting how songs like that can feel out of place in one genre box but totally natural in another listening context. And the humor in the lyrics definitely helps sell the idea of cultural mashups in everyday American life.

Yeah, that’s us, German cars (or Japanese cars) and “Brazilian leather boots” going to pick up Chinese takeout before seeing a French movie or a British band.

Glad you liked it, and it’s pretty truthful about driving Japanese cars to an Indian restaurant.
