To dye or not to dye?

The photo is another one from the display which is in our clubhouse. It has nothing to do with the discussion but isn't it just beautiful? Recently, myLotter, @Snowy, mentioned dyeing her hair. When Vince’s hair first started to go grey, his regular hairdresser suggested he dye it. He couldn’t be bothered but she kept suggesting it time after time, until one day she said she’d done it. He didn’t mention it to me. I thought it looked a bit different but thought I was imagining things. No-one noticed or said anything until the colour started to grow out. Then people kept saying how grey he was getting.

I am surprised that Vince let her colour his hair. My husband went grey, but it came in so nicely, it seemed to suit him. It was not salt and pepper for long, before it went completely grey, over the course of a summer, probably from the sun. And then it was less than a year before it was completely white.

She did it without his permission but he didn't really mind.

I'm just too lazy. Although I would love to know if people would treat me differently if I still had dark hair. Maybe I'll get a wig. After all if it's good enough for Nicole Kidman... My Mum used to dye my Dad's hair. When you look at photos, he had greying hair when they were married but then black hair throughout my childhood. Then she thought it looked too harsh so she stopped, and people commented 'Your Dad's hair has gone grey very suddenly!'. I just agreed.

I had a wig when I was young, to go from long to short hair without cutting. It's like to wear a hat and unpleasant during summer.

@Fleura - I had very long hair and it was not easy to fit it inside the wig and I confirm that it's itchy.

@LadyDuck That's the offputting thing, that it would be too itchy. And I have long hair so it might be difficult to fit it all inside.

That is funny, no one noticed his dyed hair, but they noticed he was getting grey. My hair is grey and I do not dye. It grows so fast that I should cover the growth every week.

@JudyEv - Yes, yours is still salt and pepper and I like more natural hair than dyed hair with a terribly different root.

I couldn't be bothered treating the roots all the time. Mine is pepper and salt I guess.

She must have done a really good job that the dye wasn't very noticeable and made him look completely different.

I remember thinking it looked a bit different but didn't say anything. We were all pretty busy at that point.

I guess I am of Vince's age if not older. My better half keeps on advising me I must dye my hair. She has brought quite many pouches of hair dye powder from her sisters. I have tried it and it seems to give satisfactory results.

I will be 80 in July and Vince turns 80 next April. I can't be bothered dyeing my hair but I know for some people it's important.

I don't see anything wrong in dyeing if it makes you feel good about yourself

Point is, it was the hairdresser who was looking at her bank balance. LOL

@JudyEv I am fine with hair dyeing too. For one it does give some confidence when I walk into a bank or some place where I must sound more confident. Second, my clothing purchased across the years will look odd with grey hair. I didn't plan for aging. LOL BUT and this is serious...democracy matters. Vince needed to decide whether he wanted his hair dyed or not, not the hair dresser.

I'm bald so that won't be a problem anytime soon. I have thought of dyeing my beard.

Vince always had a tinge of red in his beard but now it's mostly grey and white.

That is a good one too. It is interesting that people noticed when his grey was coming back in

Many people put dye in hair from youth. I dont know whether there are health ailments.

Probably the dyes are less harmful than they once were. Bleach was commonly used once but I don't think that would be good for your health.

@JudyEv i use mehendi a natural colour on the hair. Now I am 50 so half of my hair is grey

That's a lovely piece as well. My husband never dyed his hair; but I did. The day I retired, I started letting it grow out.

The picture is beautiful by the way. As for the dye issue, if you guys are comfortable with it, i don't see any reason why not to continue.

That's beautiful! looks like can be use as a flower vase? To dye, I am my mother's own hairdresser. I am the one who keep dying her hair everytime it turn almost white. Or even it's not yet grey as long there's an event she attend to. I need to dye her hair.

I'm not sure this would work as a vase but it looks lovely just sitting on a shelf. Your mother is lucky to have you to dye her hair. It could be expensive otherwise.

Hair coloring is one of those things you have to maintain. I do not do it anymore. Maybe I should.

I couldn't be bothered. I wouldn't want to do it myself and I wouldn't want the expense of having it done.

That surprises me that he would dye it, but also that the hairdresser would pressure him to do so.

She kept suggesting it then one day she just did it without his knowledge. It obviously wasn't too drastic as no-one, myself included, noticed.

I can't remember but I doubt it really. She'd been doing his hair for ages so I guess she didn't expect him to make a fuss about the dye but it's too long ago to know if she charged him or not.
